55 WHEREAS, The Conroe High School Band has been selected to
66 march in the 121st Rose Parade at the Tournament of Roses on January
77 1, 2010, and this talented organization is a source of great pride
88 for its city and the Lone Star State; and
99 WHEREAS, The history of the Conroe Tiger Band dates back to
1010 1929, when the ensemble was transformed from an orchestra into a
1111 show band; the group was among the first of its kind in Texas to
1212 march parade style on the football field, as well as to form letters
1313 and symbols and to use the field's yard lines to accurately measure
1414 the band's step size while performing; throughout the past eight
1515 decades, the Conroe Tiger Band has adopted the contemporary free
1616 form style, and it has received hundreds of commendations;
1717 performing its celebrated anthems and more, the band has continued
1818 to grow in popularity and now reaches audiences on national
1919 television, at professional football games, and at state and
2020 national events; and
2121 WHEREAS, Bobby W. Heathcock has led the Conroe Tiger Band
2222 since 2002; a graduate of the University of Houston, Mr. Heathcock
2323 has been honored many times during his career, and he is the
2424 recipient of the Houston Mayor's Educational Excellence Award; he
2525 has directed the band's performances at the Sugar Bowl, the
2626 Disneyland Night of Stars Parade, and the Orange Bowl; in addition,
2727 he has helped the Tigers win a number of UIL Regional Marching Band
2828 Contest 1st Division awards and TCGC Texas Divisional State
2929 Championship awards for color guard and drum line; this unstoppable
3030 team has also been named a Sam Houston State University Marching
3131 Contest Divisional Champion and a Lone Star Preview Marching
3232 Contest Finalist; under the able direction of Mr. Heathcock and his
3333 assistants, Dawn Martinez and Frank Chambers, 210 students are
3434 poised to bring further distinction to Conroe High School as the
3535 only band from Texas to be performing before millions of spectators
3636 at next year's Tournament of Roses Parade; and
3737 WHEREAS, The Conroe Tiger Band was selected to participate in
3838 "America's New Year's Celebration" based on the exceptional music
3939 and performance skills of its members, and as they travel to
4040 Pasadena, California, for this extraordinary opportunity, they
4141 take with them the enthusiastic support of their fellow Texans;
4242 now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4444 Legislature hereby congratulate the Conroe High School Band on its
4545 selection to participate in the Tournament of Roses 121st Rose
4646 Parade and that all those affiliated with the group be extended
4747 sincere best wishes for a memorable and successful experience; and,
4848 be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for the Conroe Tiger Band as an expression of high regard
5151 by the Texas House of Representatives.
