| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Houston chapter of Hadassah has benefited the |

| 6 | 6 | | community in myriad ways over the past 90 years, and it is indeed |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | fitting to honor the long service of this notable organization; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in New York in 1912 by the Daughters of Zion, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | this women's volunteer organization was named after the biblical |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | heroine Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah; its mission was to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | promote the Zionist ideal through education, public health |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | initiatives, and the training of nurses in the Palestine District |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | of the Ottoman rule; chapters soon opened in Baltimore, Cleveland, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Chicago, and Boston, and the Houston chapter was founded in 1919; |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Hadassah today supports health care, education, and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | youth institutions in Israel, and it seeks to enhance the quality of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | American and Jewish life in the U.S. through its education and youth |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | programs, promotion of health awareness, and personal enrichment |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | opportunities; the organization has a nationwide membership of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 300,000, and the Houston chapter, with 3,500 members, is the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | largest Jewish women's organization in the city, drawing members |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | from a broad geographic area and encompassing 16 groups with unique |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | interests; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Through their dedication to the greater good, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | members of the Houston chapter of Hadassah have made a positive |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | difference in their community and beyond, and it is a pleasure to |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | recognize the organization's long history of service; now, |
|---|

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby honor the Houston chapter of Hadassah for its |
