44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Jewish Herald-Voice has served readers in
66 Houston and the Gulf Coast region for more than a century; and
77 WHEREAS, This illustrious paper traces its roots to 1907,
88 when Edgar Goldberg began his career as a publisher with a circular
99 he called the Houston Jewish Bulletin; the following year, Mr.
1010 Goldberg published the first edition of the Jewish Herald, which he
1111 later renamed the Texas Jewish Herald; after his death in 1937, his
1212 wife, Esther, continued to run the weekly newspaper for several
1313 years before selling it to David White, who had recently started his
1414 own newspaper, Jewish Voice in Houston; he combined the papers as
1515 the Jewish Herald-Voice and expanded coverage, instituting columns
1616 and special holiday editions; and
1717 WHEREAS, Joseph and Jeanne Samuels became the third
1818 publishers in the newspaper's proud history in 1973, and since
1919 assuming ownership, they have greatly increased its readership; the
2020 Jewish Herald-Voice covers international, national, and local
2121 news, as well as events in the lives of its readers; the paper's
2222 stories reflect the diversity of the Jewish community in Houston
2323 and on the Gulf Coast, and its pages serve as both a forum for
2424 discussion and a means of connecting people from different
2525 denominations; subscribers to the Herald-Voice receive five
2626 magazines each year in addition to the paper--annual issues devoted
2727 to Passover and Rosh Hashanah, guides for planning weddings and
2828 bar/bat mitzvahs, and a lifestyle magazine titled VOICES in
2929 Houston; and
3030 WHEREAS, Over the years, the Herald-Voice management and
3131 staff have won numerous journalism awards from such organizations
3232 as the Texas Press Association, the Gulf Coast Press Association,
3333 and the American Press Association, as well as honors from local
3434 Jewish agencies and organizations in recognition of their myriad
3535 endeavors in behalf of the community; the Herald-Voice continues to
3636 be a true family enterprise, with several family members helping
3737 Joe and Jeanne Samuels to produce the paper; among their number is
3838 daughter Vicki Samuels, who serves as president and advertising
3939 manager; and
4040 WHEREAS, One of the oldest Jewish newspapers in the country,
4141 the Jewish Herald-Voice constitutes an important source of
4242 information for business owners, government officials, and clergy
4343 of other faiths, as well as members of the Jewish community, and it
4444 is indeed a pleasure to recognize this enduring beacon on the
4545 Houston media landscape; now, therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4747 Legislature hereby recognize the Jewish Herald-Voice for its
4848 contributions to the community and extend to its publishers and
4949 staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5151 prepared for the Jewish Herald-Voice as an expression of high
5252 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
