5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Jewish Herald-Voice has served readers in |

6 | 6 | | Houston and the Gulf Coast region for more than a century; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, This illustrious paper traces its roots to 1907, |
---|
8 | 8 | | when Edgar Goldberg began his career as a publisher with a circular |
---|
9 | 9 | | he called the Houston Jewish Bulletin; the following year, Mr. |
---|
10 | 10 | | Goldberg published the first edition of the Jewish Herald, which he |
---|
11 | 11 | | later renamed the Texas Jewish Herald; after his death in 1937, his |
---|
12 | 12 | | wife, Esther, continued to run the weekly newspaper for several |
---|
13 | 13 | | years before selling it to David White, who had recently started his |
---|
14 | 14 | | own newspaper, Jewish Voice in Houston; he combined the papers as |
---|
15 | 15 | | the Jewish Herald-Voice and expanded coverage, instituting columns |
---|
16 | 16 | | and special holiday editions; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Joseph and Jeanne Samuels became the third |
---|
18 | 18 | | publishers in the newspaper's proud history in 1973, and since |
---|
19 | 19 | | assuming ownership, they have greatly increased its readership; the |
---|
20 | 20 | | Jewish Herald-Voice covers international, national, and local |
---|
21 | 21 | | news, as well as events in the lives of its readers; the paper's |
---|
22 | 22 | | stories reflect the diversity of the Jewish community in Houston |
---|
23 | 23 | | and on the Gulf Coast, and its pages serve as both a forum for |
---|
24 | 24 | | discussion and a means of connecting people from different |
---|
25 | 25 | | denominations; subscribers to the Herald-Voice receive five |
---|
26 | 26 | | magazines each year in addition to the paper--annual issues devoted |
---|
27 | 27 | | to Passover and Rosh Hashanah, guides for planning weddings and |
---|
28 | 28 | | bar/bat mitzvahs, and a lifestyle magazine titled VOICES in |
---|
29 | 29 | | Houston; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Herald-Voice management and |
---|
31 | 31 | | staff have won numerous journalism awards from such organizations |
---|
32 | 32 | | as the Texas Press Association, the Gulf Coast Press Association, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and the American Press Association, as well as honors from local |
---|
34 | 34 | | Jewish agencies and organizations in recognition of their myriad |
---|
35 | 35 | | endeavors in behalf of the community; the Herald-Voice continues to |
---|
36 | 36 | | be a true family enterprise, with several family members helping |
---|
37 | 37 | | Joe and Jeanne Samuels to produce the paper; among their number is |
---|
38 | 38 | | daughter Vicki Samuels, who serves as president and advertising |
---|
39 | 39 | | manager; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, One of the oldest Jewish newspapers in the country, |
---|
41 | 41 | | the Jewish Herald-Voice constitutes an important source of |
---|
42 | 42 | | information for business owners, government officials, and clergy |
---|
43 | 43 | | of other faiths, as well as members of the Jewish community, and it |
---|
44 | 44 | | is indeed a pleasure to recognize this enduring beacon on the |
---|
45 | 45 | | Houston media landscape; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize the Jewish Herald-Voice for its |
---|
48 | 48 | | contributions to the community and extend to its publishers and |
---|
49 | 49 | | staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
