44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A prominent member of the Sunnyside community in
66 Houston, Dr. Edith Clark has built an impressive record of service
77 that has been of great benefit to her fellow citizens; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Waller County, Dr. Clark attended Tulane
99 University in New Orleans and earned advanced degrees in
1010 cosmetology; she was the owner and operator of Clark's House of
1111 Glamour until her retirement and is a former president of the
1212 Sunnyside Beauticians Club; moreover, she has served in several
1313 leadership positions with Theta Nu Sigma National Sorority; and
1414 WHEREAS, Dr. Clark's civic leadership has taken many forms;
1515 she organized the first Juneteenth celebration at Mt. Vernon
1616 Baptist Church in 1978, and she was instrumental in the
1717 reorganization of the Sunnyside Civic Club; in addition, she served
1818 as the first honorary mayor of Sunnyside, was a member of the board
1919 for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, and has been a very active
2020 congregant of Evangelist Chapel African Methodist Episcopal
2121 Church, where she has held various administrative offices; and
2222 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has received numerous honors for
2323 her professional and community service work throughout her life,
2424 including the Outstanding Cosmetology Award, the Excellence Award
2525 from Greater True Light Church of God in Christ, the Unsung Heroes
2626 Award from State Representative Alma Allen, and the Pillar of
2727 Community Award from Sunnyside Place Community Development
2828 Corporation; and
2929 WHEREAS, Edith Clark has devoted herself to strengthening her
3030 community, and she may take justifiable pride in the many positive
3131 changes that have resulted from her work; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3333 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Edith Clark for her many years of
3434 public service in the city of Houston and extend to her sincere best
3535 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3737 prepared for Dr. Clark as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3838 House of Representatives.
