5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A prominent member of the Sunnyside community in |

6 | 6 | | Houston, Dr. Edith Clark has built an impressive record of service |

7 | 7 | | that has been of great benefit to her fellow citizens; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Waller County, Dr. Clark attended Tulane |
---|
9 | 9 | | University in New Orleans and earned advanced degrees in |
---|
10 | 10 | | cosmetology; she was the owner and operator of Clark's House of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Glamour until her retirement and is a former president of the |
---|
12 | 12 | | Sunnyside Beauticians Club; moreover, she has served in several |
---|
13 | 13 | | leadership positions with Theta Nu Sigma National Sorority; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Clark's civic leadership has taken many forms; |
---|
15 | 15 | | she organized the first Juneteenth celebration at Mt. Vernon |
---|
16 | 16 | | Baptist Church in 1978, and she was instrumental in the |
---|
17 | 17 | | reorganization of the Sunnyside Civic Club; in addition, she served |
---|
18 | 18 | | as the first honorary mayor of Sunnyside, was a member of the board |
---|
19 | 19 | | for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, and has been a very active |
---|
20 | 20 | | congregant of Evangelist Chapel African Methodist Episcopal |
---|
21 | 21 | | Church, where she has held various administrative offices; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has received numerous honors for |
---|
23 | 23 | | her professional and community service work throughout her life, |
---|
24 | 24 | | including the Outstanding Cosmetology Award, the Excellence Award |
---|
25 | 25 | | from Greater True Light Church of God in Christ, the Unsung Heroes |
---|
26 | 26 | | Award from State Representative Alma Allen, and the Pillar of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Community Award from Sunnyside Place Community Development |
---|
28 | 28 | | Corporation; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Edith Clark has devoted herself to strengthening her |
---|
30 | 30 | | community, and she may take justifiable pride in the many positive |
---|
31 | 31 | | changes that have resulted from her work; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby honor Dr. Edith Clark for her many years of |
---|
34 | 34 | | public service in the city of Houston and extend to her sincere best |
---|
35 | 35 | | wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
