| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Legendary high school football coach Joe Clements |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | has been honored with the 2009 Mance Park Lifetime Achievement |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Award from the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Clements began his involvement with Huntsville |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | High School athletics when he was a student; playing quarterback |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | under the direction of coach Mance Park, he led the Hornets to their |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | first state football championship in 1953 and won all-district |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | honors in both football and baseball; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Clements went on to become a teacher and coach, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and in 1975 he returned to Huntsville High to take charge of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | football team; so began a highly successful tenure that included 4 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | regional championships, and a dramatic 51-game winning streak; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The pinnacle of the coach's success came in 1980, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | when the Hornets won the state title; Coach Clements is believed to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | be the only person in Texas to play quarterback on a state |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | championship team and then later lead the same school to the title |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | as coach; the Huntsville football program received national |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | attention thanks to his guidance, and he finished his career with a |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | remarkable record of 221 wins, 77 losses, and 6 ties; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of nearly two decades, Joe Clements |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | mentored hundreds of Huntsville student-athletes, instilling in |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | them an enduring commitment to excellence and teaching them |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | valuable lessons about dedication and teamwork, and he is indeed |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | deserving of this prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Joe Clements on receiving the Mance |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Park Lifetime Achievement Award and extend to him sincere best |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
