H.R. No. 2833 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Through their participation in the Speak Up! Speak Out! program, students at Akins High School, Garza High School, and LBJ High School in Austin are discovering the many ways they can make a difference in their communities; and WHEREAS, An initiative of the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation at The University of Texas at Austin, Speak Up! Speak Out! is an innovative civic education program that allows high school students to identify community problems and develop creative and viable solutions; working in teams, the students present their findings to area leaders at the annual spring civics fair, which was held this year on May 21, 2009, on the UT-Austin campus; and WHEREAS, Teachers Linda O'Neal of Akins High, Martha Cason of Garza High, and Mark Cunningham of LBJ High have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their work with the Speak Up! Speak Out! programs at their schools; these educators, in cooperation with staff, mentors, and volunteer judges, play an important role in encouraging our youth to take an interest in civic matters; and WHEREAS, A democratic form of government depends on the informed participation of its people, and the skills and knowledge gained through Speak Up! Speak Out! are preparing many young Texans to become engaged, productive citizens of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize the students and teachers at Akins, Garza, and LBJ High Schools who participated in Speak Up! Speak Out! and commend all those involved in this noteworthy program for their contributions; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the schools and for the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
