5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Virginia Mayers retired from the South Texas |

6 | 6 | | Workforce Development Board in 2007, drawing to a close a notable |

7 | 7 | | career that spanned more than four decades; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Laredo, Virginia Mayers graduated from |
---|
9 | 9 | | Martin High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in |
---|
10 | 10 | | vocational home economics education from Texas Woman's University |
---|
11 | 11 | | in 1967 and a master's degree in secondary education from Laredo |
---|
12 | 12 | | State University in 1979; after holding positions with Southwestern |
---|
13 | 13 | | Bell Telephone Company and The Texas A&M University System, Ms. |
---|
14 | 14 | | Mayers served as a food service production and management |
---|
15 | 15 | | instructor for the Laredo Independent School District; in 1987, she |
---|
16 | 16 | | became the director of operations for the South Texas Private |
---|
17 | 17 | | Industry Council, where she assisted in the areas of human |
---|
18 | 18 | | resources, development, procedures, and public relations; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Mayers later joined Laredo Community College and |
---|
20 | 20 | | served from 1994 to 2002 as director of continuing education and |
---|
21 | 21 | | department chair; she spent the last five years of her career as |
---|
22 | 22 | | deputy director for workforce development with the South Texas |
---|
23 | 23 | | Workforce Development Board; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed professional maintained affiliations |
---|
25 | 25 | | with the state and national chapters of both the Association of |
---|
26 | 26 | | Family and Consumer Sciences and the Extension Association of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Family and Consumer Sciences, from which she received the |
---|
28 | 28 | | Distinguished Service Award; she was also recognized with a |
---|
29 | 29 | | Superior Service Award from Texas AgriLife Extension Service and |
---|
30 | 30 | | was named a delegate to the White House Conference on Families; |
---|
31 | 31 | | moreover, she was active in her community as a member of numerous |
---|
32 | 32 | | service groups, including the City of Laredo Youth Steering |
---|
33 | 33 | | Committee, the South Texas Development Council board, the Webb |
---|
34 | 34 | | County Farm Bureau, the Texas State Nutrition Council, and the Webb |
---|
35 | 35 | | County 4-H Adult Leaders Association, which she served as |
---|
36 | 36 | | president; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, With an unwavering dedication to family services and |
---|
38 | 38 | | continuing education, Ms. Mayers worked to improve the lives of |
---|
39 | 39 | | countless Texans, and she may indeed reflect with great pride on a |
---|
40 | 40 | | career well spent; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Virginia Mayers on her |
---|
43 | 43 | | professional achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
---|
44 | 44 | | continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
