55 WHEREAS, The Honorable Aaron Pea, Jr., a four-term member of
66 the Texas House of Representatives from Hidalgo County, is
77 celebrating his 50th birthday on June 8, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Austin and raised his first few years in the
99 shadow of the Capitol, Aaron Pea moved to Edinburg with his family
1010 as a young child; after earning his diploma from Edinburg High
1111 School in 1977 and his bachelor's degree from UT-Austin in 1984, he
1212 was awarded his juris doctor degree from Texas Southern University
1313 in 1987; and
1414 WHEREAS, Representative Pea was licensed to practice law by
1515 the State Bar of Texas in May 1988; in December 1995, he became
1616 board certified by the State Bar of Texas in the area of Labor and
1717 Employment Law; Aaron Pea enjoyed a celebrated career as one of the
1818 more accomplished employment trial lawyers in the state, later
1919 serving on the State Bar of Texas' governing board for Labor and
2020 Employment attorneys; after 17 years of practicing almost
2121 exclusively as a plaintiff's lawyer, Representative Pea began
2222 working solely as a civil defense lawyer in April 2005; Texas
2323 Monthly has recognized him as a "Super Lawyer" in both fields; he
2424 has been employed by the Pea, McDonald, Prestia and Ornelas law
2525 firm, by Aaron Pea and Associates, and by Colvin and Chaney; and
2626 WHEREAS, First elected to the Texas Legislature in 2002,
2727 Representative Pea has been a strong advocate for education,
2828 working to increase salaries for public school teachers and to
2929 significantly further the development of The University of
3030 Texas-Pan American; to that end, he has been instrumental in
3131 securing funding for the construction of a fine arts center and
3232 student wellness center and for augmenting the resources of the
3333 Regional Academic Health Center on campus; he is also the author and
3434 house sponsor of legislation to create a medical school in the Rio
3535 Grande Valley; and
3636 WHEREAS, Having entered service in the Texas State Guard as a
3737 major, Aaron Pea has been a staunch champion of military veterans;
3838 he participated in the March 14-20, 2009, march from Edinburg to the
3939 Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, a march that was
4040 sponsored by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are
4141 living in the Rio Grande Valley and that was intended to draw
4242 attention to the need for a VA hospital in the Valley; in addition,
4343 he has authored legislation to posthumously award the Texas
4444 Legislative Medal of Honor to Sergeant Alfredo Gonzalez and Private
4545 Pedro Cano; and
4646 WHEREAS, Representative Pea is also a forceful proponent of
4747 drug-abuse treatment and prevention programs, with his primary
4848 legislative goal in this area being the establishment of a drug
4949 treatment center in South Texas; moreover, he supports the John
5050 Austin Pea Memorial Scholarship, which was established by the
5151 Texas Association of Addiction Professionals to provide assistance
5252 to members of Texas Teens for Legislative Change who wish to pursue
5353 higher education; and
5454 WHEREAS, Representative Pea formerly chaired the criminal
5555 jurisprudence committee and currently serves as vice chair of the
5656 elections committee and as a member of the ways and means and
5757 redistricting committees; and
5858 WHEREAS, Recognized by Capitol Inside as a top house
5959 negotiator during the 80th Legislature, Representative Pea has
6060 received numerous other accolades as well; among these are the
6161 Tough on Crime award, given by the Texas District and County
6262 Attorneys Association, the Champion for Children award from the
6363 Boys and Girls Club, the Bulldog award from the Rio Grande Valley
6464 Teachers Association, and the Lifetime Achievement award from
6565 LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens; and
6666 WHEREAS, Aaron Pea and his wife, Monica, are the parents of
6767 five children, Adrienne Pea-Garza, Aron Leonel Pea III, John
6868 Austin Pea, Alyssa Victoria Pea, and Michael Anthony Pea; they
6969 are also the grandparents of Aquiles Jaime Garza, Chelsea Nicole
7070 Pea, Aron Christian Garza, Aaron Austin Pea, and Addison Rose
7171 Pea; and
7272 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan continues to embody the highest
7373 standards of public service, and it is a pleasure to pay tribute to
7474 him as he prepares to embark on a new, and no doubt equally
7575 productive, decade; now, therefore, be it
7676 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
7777 Legislature hereby congratulate the Honorable Aaron Pea, Jr., on
7878 his upcoming 50th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for
7979 the coming year; and, be it further
8080 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
8181 prepared for Representative Pea as an expression of high regard by
8282 the Texas House of Representatives.
