5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable Aaron Pea, Jr., a four-term member of |
---|
6 | 6 | | the Texas House of Representatives from Hidalgo County, is |
---|
7 | 7 | | celebrating his 50th birthday on June 8, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Austin and raised his first few years in the |
---|
9 | 9 | | shadow of the Capitol, Aaron Pea moved to Edinburg with his family |
---|
10 | 10 | | as a young child; after earning his diploma from Edinburg High |
---|
11 | 11 | | School in 1977 and his bachelor's degree from UT-Austin in 1984, he |
---|
12 | 12 | | was awarded his juris doctor degree from Texas Southern University |
---|
13 | 13 | | in 1987; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Representative Pea was licensed to practice law by |
---|
15 | 15 | | the State Bar of Texas in May 1988; in December 1995, he became |
---|
16 | 16 | | board certified by the State Bar of Texas in the area of Labor and |
---|
17 | 17 | | Employment Law; Aaron Pea enjoyed a celebrated career as one of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | more accomplished employment trial lawyers in the state, later |
---|
19 | 19 | | serving on the State Bar of Texas' governing board for Labor and |
---|
20 | 20 | | Employment attorneys; after 17 years of practicing almost |
---|
21 | 21 | | exclusively as a plaintiff's lawyer, Representative Pea began |
---|
22 | 22 | | working solely as a civil defense lawyer in April 2005; Texas |
---|
23 | 23 | | Monthly has recognized him as a "Super Lawyer" in both fields; he |
---|
24 | 24 | | has been employed by the Pea, McDonald, Prestia and Ornelas law |
---|
25 | 25 | | firm, by Aaron Pea and Associates, and by Colvin and Chaney; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, First elected to the Texas Legislature in 2002, |
---|
27 | 27 | | Representative Pea has been a strong advocate for education, |
---|
28 | 28 | | working to increase salaries for public school teachers and to |
---|
29 | 29 | | significantly further the development of The University of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Texas-Pan American; to that end, he has been instrumental in |
---|
31 | 31 | | securing funding for the construction of a fine arts center and |
---|
32 | 32 | | student wellness center and for augmenting the resources of the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Regional Academic Health Center on campus; he is also the author and |
---|
34 | 34 | | house sponsor of legislation to create a medical school in the Rio |
---|
35 | 35 | | Grande Valley; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Having entered service in the Texas State Guard as a |
---|
37 | 37 | | major, Aaron Pea has been a staunch champion of military veterans; |
---|
38 | 38 | | he participated in the March 14-20, 2009, march from Edinburg to the |
---|
39 | 39 | | Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, a march that was |
---|
40 | 40 | | sponsored by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are |
---|
41 | 41 | | living in the Rio Grande Valley and that was intended to draw |
---|
42 | 42 | | attention to the need for a VA hospital in the Valley; in addition, |
---|
43 | 43 | | he has authored legislation to posthumously award the Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislative Medal of Honor to Sergeant Alfredo Gonzalez and Private |
---|
45 | 45 | | Pedro Cano; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Representative Pea is also a forceful proponent of |
---|
47 | 47 | | drug-abuse treatment and prevention programs, with his primary |
---|
48 | 48 | | legislative goal in this area being the establishment of a drug |
---|
49 | 49 | | treatment center in South Texas; moreover, he supports the John |
---|
50 | 50 | | Austin Pea Memorial Scholarship, which was established by the |
---|
51 | 51 | | Texas Association of Addiction Professionals to provide assistance |
---|
52 | 52 | | to members of Texas Teens for Legislative Change who wish to pursue |
---|
53 | 53 | | higher education; and |
---|
54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, Representative Pea formerly chaired the criminal |
---|
55 | 55 | | jurisprudence committee and currently serves as vice chair of the |
---|
56 | 56 | | elections committee and as a member of the ways and means and |
---|
57 | 57 | | redistricting committees; and |
---|
58 | 58 | | WHEREAS, Recognized by Capitol Inside as a top house |
---|
59 | 59 | | negotiator during the 80th Legislature, Representative Pea has |
---|
60 | 60 | | received numerous other accolades as well; among these are the |
---|
61 | 61 | | Tough on Crime award, given by the Texas District and County |
---|
62 | 62 | | Attorneys Association, the Champion for Children award from the |
---|
63 | 63 | | Boys and Girls Club, the Bulldog award from the Rio Grande Valley |
---|
64 | 64 | | Teachers Association, and the Lifetime Achievement award from |
---|
65 | 65 | | LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens; and |
---|
66 | 66 | | WHEREAS, Aaron Pea and his wife, Monica, are the parents of |
---|
67 | 67 | | five children, Adrienne Pea-Garza, Aron Leonel Pea III, John |
---|
68 | 68 | | Austin Pea, Alyssa Victoria Pea, and Michael Anthony Pea; they |
---|
69 | 69 | | are also the grandparents of Aquiles Jaime Garza, Chelsea Nicole |
---|
70 | 70 | | Pea, Aron Christian Garza, Aaron Austin Pea, and Addison Rose |

72 | 72 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan continues to embody the highest |

73 | 73 | | standards of public service, and it is a pleasure to pay tribute to |
