44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Dr. Royce Money, who has rendered outstanding
66 service as president of Abilene Christian University, is retiring
77 from that position on May 31, 2010, and transitioning into a new
88 role as ACU chancellor; and
99 WHEREAS, A native of Temple, Royce Money became the first
1010 member of his family to attend college, earning both his bachelor's
1111 and master of divinity degrees from ACU and his doctorate in
1212 religion from Baylor University; in addition, he received a
1313 master's degree in human development and the family from the
1414 University of Nebraska; and
1515 WHEREAS, Dr. Money worked in the ministry for more than a
1616 dozen years until ACU recruited him as an associate professor of
1717 marriage and family therapy in 1981; a few years later, he
1818 transferred to the Bible department to help develop and direct the
1919 school's ministry program; in 1987, he became executive assistant
2020 to the university's then president, Bill Teague, and served as vice
2121 president and provost before becoming the institution's 10th
2222 president in 1991; and
2323 WHEREAS, Over the course of Dr. Money's tenure the school's
2424 national reputation has grown significantly, and its numerous
2525 accolades include high marks in the U.S. News & World Report 2009
2626 edition of "America's Best Colleges," where it ranks No. 1 in the
2727 16-state western region for innovative leadership; ACU's Mobile
2828 Learning Initiative recently received the Institutional Excellence
2929 Award from the Association for Information Communications
3030 Technology Professionals in Higher Education; moreover, the
3131 university won inclusion in the publication America's 100 Best
3232 College Buys for 12 consecutive years and earned a spot on the 2008
3333 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll; and
3434 WHEREAS, Under Dr. Money's skillful leadership, the ACU
3535 endowment has more than quadrupled to over $236 million, and the
3636 university has received more than $300 million in operating,
3737 capital, and endowment gifts; successful capital campaigns have
3838 funded major renovations of campus facilities and the construction
3939 of many new buildings, including a special events center, a
4040 performing arts center, and a residence hall; and
4141 WHEREAS, This dynamic educator directed the creation of the
4242 School of Social Work and the School of Information Technology and
4343 Computing, and he has overseen an increase in the number of academic
4444 programs achieving specialized accreditation and the addition of
4545 key graduate and professional programs, including speech-language
4646 pathology and conflict resolution; he has also demonstrated a
4747 commitment to developing a more diverse and global focus through
4848 the expansion of study abroad programs and online degree programs,
4949 as well as the establishment of the Office for Student
5050 Multicultural Enrichment; the diversity of the student body has
5151 increased as well, and ACU today draws students from 60 foreign
5252 countries, as well as most of the 50 states; and
5353 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Money enjoys the love and
5454 support of his wife, Pam, and their daughters, Alison and Jennifer,
5555 all of whom count themselves as proud ACU alums; and
5656 WHEREAS, Royce Money's vision and expertise have contributed
5757 immeasurably to the stature of Abilene Christian University, and
5858 the school's students and faculty are indeed fortunate to continue
5959 to benefit from his guidance and dedication; now, therefore, be it
6060 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
6161 Legislature hereby commend Dr. Royce Money for his outstanding
6262 achievements as president of Abilene Christian University and
6363 extend to him sincere best wishes for success in his new role as
6464 chancellor; and, be it further
6565 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6666 prepared for Dr. Money as an expression of high regard by the Texas
6767 House of Representatives.
