44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The citizens of Wichita Falls lost a cherished
66 member of the community with the passing of Elizabeth Perkins
77 Prothro on May 23, 2009, at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of prominent local residents Joe J.
99 Perkins and Lois Craddock Perkins, Mrs. Prothro graduated from
1010 Wichita Falls High School and earned a bachelor's degree from
1111 Southern Methodist University; she married Charles Nelson Prothro
1212 in 1938, and the couple lovingly raised four children, Joe, Mark,
1313 Kay, and the late Vin Prothro; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mrs. Prothro was a generous, lifelong supporter of
1515 the First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls and a champion of
1616 higher education; she endowed scholarships in a variety of
1717 disciplines at Midwestern State University, where she also served
1818 on the board of regents, and she continued her family's tradition of
1919 philanthropy in behalf of Southern Methodist University; her
2020 donations to SMU included a gift of $6 million in 2007 to fund
2121 building renovations and an addition to the Perkins School of
2222 Theology; in addition, she served on the SMU Board of Governors and
2323 on the seminary's executive board; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mrs. Prothro's other charitable interests included
2525 the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center, of which she was a founding
2626 member, and the River Bend Nature Center, site of the Elizabeth
2727 Prothro Pavilion; in her free time, she enjoyed photography, and
2828 her talent earned her work a place in private and university
2929 collections; and
3030 WHEREAS, A gracious and caring woman, Elizabeth Prothro is
3131 deeply missed but will long be remembered for her generous support
3232 of scholarship, her devotion to her faith, and her gifts to make
3333 this world a better place; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3535 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Elizabeth Perkins
3636 Prothro and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family:
3737 to her sons, Mark and Joe Prothro; to her daughter, Kay Yeager; to
3838 her 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and
3939 great-great-grandchild; and to her other relatives and many
4040 friends; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4242 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4343 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elizabeth
4444 Perkins Prothro.
