5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Wichita Falls lost a cherished |

6 | 6 | | member of the community with the passing of Elizabeth Perkins |
---|
7 | 7 | | Prothro on May 23, 2009, at the age of 89; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of prominent local residents Joe J. |
---|
9 | 9 | | Perkins and Lois Craddock Perkins, Mrs. Prothro graduated from |
---|
10 | 10 | | Wichita Falls High School and earned a bachelor's degree from |
---|
11 | 11 | | Southern Methodist University; she married Charles Nelson Prothro |
---|
12 | 12 | | in 1938, and the couple lovingly raised four children, Joe, Mark, |
---|
13 | 13 | | Kay, and the late Vin Prothro; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Prothro was a generous, lifelong supporter of |
---|
15 | 15 | | the First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls and a champion of |
---|
16 | 16 | | higher education; she endowed scholarships in a variety of |
---|
17 | 17 | | disciplines at Midwestern State University, where she also served |
---|
18 | 18 | | on the board of regents, and she continued her family's tradition of |
---|
19 | 19 | | philanthropy in behalf of Southern Methodist University; her |
---|
20 | 20 | | donations to SMU included a gift of $6 million in 2007 to fund |
---|
21 | 21 | | building renovations and an addition to the Perkins School of |
---|
22 | 22 | | Theology; in addition, she served on the SMU Board of Governors and |
---|
23 | 23 | | on the seminary's executive board; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Prothro's other charitable interests included |
---|
25 | 25 | | the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center, of which she was a founding |
---|
26 | 26 | | member, and the River Bend Nature Center, site of the Elizabeth |
---|
27 | 27 | | Prothro Pavilion; in her free time, she enjoyed photography, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | her talent earned her work a place in private and university |
---|
29 | 29 | | collections; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A gracious and caring woman, Elizabeth Prothro is |
---|
31 | 31 | | deeply missed but will long be remembered for her generous support |
---|
32 | 32 | | of scholarship, her devotion to her faith, and her gifts to make |
---|
33 | 33 | | this world a better place; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Elizabeth Perkins |
---|
36 | 36 | | Prothro and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: |

37 | 37 | | to her sons, Mark and Joe Prothro; to her daughter, Kay Yeager; to |
---|
38 | 38 | | her 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | great-great-grandchild; and to her other relatives and many |
---|
40 | 40 | | friends; and, be it further |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

42 | 42 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |

43 | 43 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elizabeth |
