44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
66 join the citizens of Waller County in celebrating February 10,
77 2009, as Waller County Day at the State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1873 from
99 sections of Austin and Grimes Counties, Waller County is named for
1010 Edwin Waller, a signatory of the Texas Declaration of Independence
1111 and the City of Austin's first mayor; and
1212 WHEREAS, Waller County's early settlers were members of
1313 Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony; the county played a role
1414 in the Texas Revolution, serving as the site of an encampment for
1515 the army of General Sam Houston; and
1616 WHEREAS, Before the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the
1717 economy of Waller County was driven largely by agriculture, with
1818 cotton being the foremost crop; a diverse population of African
1919 Americans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles, and Czechs came to the
2020 region in the late 18th century and early 19th century; recently,
2121 the county has experienced significant population growth; and
2222 WHEREAS, The citizens of Waller County are justly proud of
2323 their county's distinguished history and the many contributions its
2424 people have made to the growth and progress of our state; now,
2525 therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2727 Legislature hereby recognize February 10, 2009, as Waller County
2828 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the citizens
2929 of Waller County who have traveled to the Capitol for this
3030 commemoration.
