55 WHEREAS, The valiant Americans who fought for this country
66 during the crucial years of World War II are deserving of the
77 highest respect; and
88 WHEREAS, Felix Rodriguez, Sr., of Elsa was among those who
99 endured the grim dangers of war to preserve this nation's freedom at
1010 that critical juncture; and
1111 WHEREAS, Born in McAllen in 1926, Mr. Rodriguez enlisted in
1212 the U.S. Army in September 1944, and as a rifleman with Troop E, 8th
1313 Cavalry Regiment, he served with distinction in the Pacific
1414 Theater; after helping to liberate the Philippines, he witnessed
1515 the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo
1616 Bay; and
1717 WHEREAS, Private Rodriguez earned a number of military honors
1818 for his intrepid service, including the Good Conduct Medal, the
1919 Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and Ribbon with two Bronze Stars,
2020 the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, the
2121 Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, the Philippine Liberation
2222 Medal and Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, two Overseas Service Bars,
2323 and the Combat Infantryman Badge; and
2424 WHEREAS, After his discharge from the military in 1946, Mr.
2525 Rodriguez began a career as a truck driver that spanned more than
2626 half a century; through the years, he has been a loving husband to
2727 his wife of six decades, Esperanza Madrigal Rodriguez, and a caring
2828 father to his many children; and
2929 WHEREAS, Mr. Rodriguez has also taken an active role in his
3030 community, helping to found the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.
3131 7473 in Elsa; and
3232 WHEREAS, Each year on Veterans Day we reflect on the
3333 contributions made by the members of America's armed forces, and in
3434 that spirit, the members of this chamber recognize the tremendous
3535 valor of Private Felix Rodriguez and his noble actions in behalf of
3636 his country and its citizens; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3838 Legislature hereby honor Felix Rodriguez, Sr., for his courageous
3939 service as a member of the United States Army during World War II
4040 and extend to him sincere appreciation for his steadfast
4141 patriotism; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4343 prepared for Mr. Rodriguez as an expression of high regard by the
4444 Texas House of Representatives.
