 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Karla K. Morton of Denton has been appointed to
 serve as the 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate by the Texas Commission
 on the Arts; and
 WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, Karla Morton worked for the
 Battalion student newspaper while she attended Texas A&M
 University, and she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in
 1986; she currently resides in Denton, where she is engaged in the
 arts scene as a founding board member of the Denton Poets' Assembly,
 and she is active on the boards of Dos Gatos Press and the Greater
 Denton Arts Council; and
 WHEREAS, A talented poet, songwriter, and children's book
 author, Ms. Morton published a book/CD of poems with musical
 accompaniment entitled Wee Cowrin' Timorous Beastie in 2007, and
 she is working on producing it as a touring stage show; her poems
 have also appeared in such publications as Southwestern American
 Literature, descant, Amarillo Bay, di-verse-city, Concho River
 Review, and the Wichita Falls Literature and Art Review, and she has
 produced two manuscripts, "Hallowed Sacred Song" and "Redefining
 Beauty," that offer words of encouragement to women undergoing
 chemotherapy; and
 WHEREAS, Ms. Morton regularly travels across the Lone Star
 State to promote the arts and to perform her poetry at schools,
 universities, and bookstores, as well as at various events,
 including the Langdon Weekend, the Salado Scottish Clan Gathering
 and Highland Games, the Austin International Poetry Festival, and
 the North Texas Irish Festival; moreover, her readings, workshops,
 and spoken poetry performances have been covered by numerous Texas
 newspapers; and
 WHEREAS, Through her poetry and community outreach, Karla
 Morton inspires her fellow citizens and enriches the cultural
 landscape, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor her for her
 commitment to enhancing the arts in the Lone Star State; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Karla K. Morton on her selection as
 the 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate and extend to her sincere best
 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Ms. Morton as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
