44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Karla K. Morton of Denton has been appointed to
66 serve as the 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate by the Texas Commission
77 on the Arts; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, Karla Morton worked for the
99 Battalion student newspaper while she attended Texas A&M
1010 University, and she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in
1111 1986; she currently resides in Denton, where she is engaged in the
1212 arts scene as a founding board member of the Denton Poets' Assembly,
1313 and she is active on the boards of Dos Gatos Press and the Greater
1414 Denton Arts Council; and
1515 WHEREAS, A talented poet, songwriter, and children's book
1616 author, Ms. Morton published a book/CD of poems with musical
1717 accompaniment entitled Wee Cowrin' Timorous Beastie in 2007, and
1818 she is working on producing it as a touring stage show; her poems
1919 have also appeared in such publications as Southwestern American
2020 Literature, descant, Amarillo Bay, di-verse-city, Concho River
2121 Review, and the Wichita Falls Literature and Art Review, and she has
2222 produced two manuscripts, "Hallowed Sacred Song" and "Redefining
2323 Beauty," that offer words of encouragement to women undergoing
2424 chemotherapy; and
2525 WHEREAS, Ms. Morton regularly travels across the Lone Star
2626 State to promote the arts and to perform her poetry at schools,
2727 universities, and bookstores, as well as at various events,
2828 including the Langdon Weekend, the Salado Scottish Clan Gathering
2929 and Highland Games, the Austin International Poetry Festival, and
3030 the North Texas Irish Festival; moreover, her readings, workshops,
3131 and spoken poetry performances have been covered by numerous Texas
3232 newspapers; and
3333 WHEREAS, Through her poetry and community outreach, Karla
3434 Morton inspires her fellow citizens and enriches the cultural
3535 landscape, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor her for her
3636 commitment to enhancing the arts in the Lone Star State; now,
3737 therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby congratulate Karla K. Morton on her selection as
4040 the 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate and extend to her sincere best
4141 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4343 prepared for Ms. Morton as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4444 House of Representatives.
