| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Karla K. Morton of Denton has been appointed to |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | serve as the 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate by the Texas Commission |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | on the Arts; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, Karla Morton worked for the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Battalion student newspaper while she attended Texas A&M |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | University, and she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 1986; she currently resides in Denton, where she is engaged in the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | arts scene as a founding board member of the Denton Poets' Assembly, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and she is active on the boards of Dos Gatos Press and the Greater |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Denton Arts Council; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A talented poet, songwriter, and children's book |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | author, Ms. Morton published a book/CD of poems with musical |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | accompaniment entitled Wee Cowrin' Timorous Beastie in 2007, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | she is working on producing it as a touring stage show; her poems |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | have also appeared in such publications as Southwestern American |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Literature, descant, Amarillo Bay, di-verse-city, Concho River |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Review, and the Wichita Falls Literature and Art Review, and she has |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | produced two manuscripts, "Hallowed Sacred Song" and "Redefining |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Beauty," that offer words of encouragement to women undergoing |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | chemotherapy; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Morton regularly travels across the Lone Star |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | State to promote the arts and to perform her poetry at schools, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | universities, and bookstores, as well as at various events, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | including the Langdon Weekend, the Salado Scottish Clan Gathering |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and Highland Games, the Austin International Poetry Festival, and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the North Texas Irish Festival; moreover, her readings, workshops, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and spoken poetry performances have been covered by numerous Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | newspapers; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Through her poetry and community outreach, Karla |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Morton inspires her fellow citizens and enriches the cultural |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | landscape, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor her for her |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | commitment to enhancing the arts in the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Karla K. Morton on her selection as |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | the 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate and extend to her sincere best |

| 41 | 41 | | wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
