H.R. No. 2955 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 2009 Founder's Observance at Paul Quinn College took place March 28 through April 4, with alumni, faculty, and students joining together to celebrate the theme of "137 Years of Combining Intellect with Faith"; and WHEREAS, One of the oldest liberal arts colleges founded for African American students, the institution was originally known as the Connectional College, and it opened its doors in Austin in 1872, thanks to the work of Bishop J. M. Brown and other members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; after moving to Waco and becoming known as Waco College, the institution came under the direction of Bishop William Paul Quinn, who oversaw an expansion of its curriculum and facilities; in 1881, the college was chartered by the State of Texas and was renamed in honor of Bishop Quinn; and WHEREAS, Through the decades, Paul Quinn College has continued to benefit from the work of determined leaders and dedicated educators; these individuals have maintained the institution's mission of providing a quality, faith-based education to students while also helping the school to grow and adapt to a changing world; in 1990, Paul Quinn College relocated to Dallas, and it is now celebrating its 19th year in North Texas; and WHEREAS, This admirable place of higher learning has prepared numerous generations of students for productive futures, and the weeklong Founder's Observance offered a welcome opportunity to reflect on the many achievements and advancements that have been effected by its educators and alumni and to express support for the institution's ongoing work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Founder's Observance at Paul Quinn College and commend the school's faculty, students, and staff for their continuing commitment to this outstanding institution; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the college as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
