5	5	WHEREAS, The 2009 Founder's Observance at Paul Quinn College
6	6	took place March 28 through April 4, with alumni, faculty, and
7	7	students joining together to celebrate the theme of "137 Years of
8	8	Combining Intellect with Faith"; and
9	9	WHEREAS, One of the oldest liberal arts colleges founded for
10	10	African American students, the institution was originally known as
11	11	the Connectional College, and it opened its doors in Austin in 1872,
12	12	thanks to the work of Bishop J. M. Brown and other members of the
13	13	African Methodist Episcopal Church; after moving to Waco and
14	14	becoming known as Waco College, the institution came under the
15	15	direction of Bishop William Paul Quinn, who oversaw an expansion of
16	16	its curriculum and facilities; in 1881, the college was chartered
17	17	by the State of Texas and was renamed in honor of Bishop Quinn; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Through the decades, Paul Quinn College has
19	19	continued to benefit from the work of determined leaders and
20	20	dedicated educators; these individuals have maintained the
21	21	institution's mission of providing a quality, faith-based
22	22	education to students while also helping the school to grow and
23	23	adapt to a changing world; in 1990, Paul Quinn College relocated to
24	24	Dallas, and it is now celebrating its 19th year in North Texas; and
25	25	WHEREAS, This admirable place of higher learning has prepared
26	26	numerous generations of students for productive futures, and the
27	27	weeklong Founder's Observance offered a welcome opportunity to
28	28	reflect on the many achievements and advancements that have been
29	29	effected by its educators and alumni and to express support for the
30	30	institution's ongoing work; now, therefore, be it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
32	32	Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Founder's Observance at
33	33	Paul Quinn College and commend the school's faculty, students, and
34	34	staff for their continuing commitment to this outstanding
35	35	institution; and, be it further
36	36	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
37	37	prepared for the college as an expression of high regard by the
38	38	Texas House of Representatives.
