| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The 60th birthday of a distinguished Texan is indeed |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | cause for celebration, and Jim Beckett of Dallas reached this |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | memorable milestone on May 10, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A renowned expert in sports card values, Mr. Beckett |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | earned his doctorate in statistics from Southern Methodist |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | University in 1975, joined Bowling Green University as an associate |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | professor, and in 1980 became vice president of a Dallas consulting |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | firm; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, While he was teaching at Bowling Green, Mr. |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Beckett's passion for sports and collectibles led him to produce a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | baseball card price guide out of a desire to bring some order to the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | disorganized baseball card business; he soon began printing annual |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | price guides, and in November 1984 he published 10,000 copies of the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | first edition of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly; this periodical |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | quickly became a trusted reference source for collectors, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | within a few years Mr. Beckett had turned his hobby into the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | successful Beckett Publications; he authored more than 50 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | sports-related books, including annual price guides in several |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | fields, and served as CEO of the company until selling it in January |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 2005; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Beckett is now CEO of Beckett Interests Inc. and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | serves on the boards of DRG and Liquid Motors; moreover, he serves |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | as a member of the boards of Grad Resources and the West Dallas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Initiative and of the DFW Metroplex Advisory Board of the Salvation |

| 29 | 29 | | Army; his numerous affiliations include the American Statistical |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Association, the Benefactors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and the Society for American Baseball Research; a valued member of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Stonebriar Community Church and of the Dallas Theological Seminary |

| 33 | 33 | | Presidents Council, he gives generously of his time and talents to |

| 34 | 34 | | many local, national, and international ministries and nonprofit |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | organizations; in his leisure time, he enjoys golfing, antiques, |

| 36 | 36 | | fitness, fine dining, musicals, reading, and traveling; and |

| 37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Jim Beckett is respected and admired for his |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | professional accomplishments and his contributions to the |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | community, and it is a pleasure to join his family and friends in |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | commemorating the 60th anniversary of his birth; now, therefore, be |

| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
