5	5	WHEREAS, A rich and generous life drew to a close with the
6	6	passing of Lester Booth Whitton of Kerrville on March 10, 2008, at
7	7	the age of 86; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The son of William Alford Whitton and Jewell Myrtle
9	9	West, Mr. Whitton was born in Nacogdoches County on February 22,
10	10	1922; during World War II, he served in the Cavalry Reconnaissance
11	11	Troop of the Third Army and was wounded in battle in Germany in
12	12	1945; his valor was recognized with a Purple Heart and two Bronze
13	13	Stars; and
14	14	WHEREAS, After his discharge, Mr. Whitton earned his
15	15	bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The University of Texas
16	16	at Austin, where he met and married Rachel Louise Stiefel; the
17	17	couple moved to Kerrville, and Mr. Whitton worked in construction
18	18	for his wife's father, Earl Stiefel, before starting his own
19	19	planning and engineering business; Mr. Whitton also supervised
20	20	construction for the San Antonio firm Noonan & Krocker; he became a
21	21	registered professional engineer in 1957 and designed banks, office
22	22	buildings, and residences across the Hill Country; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Mr. Whitton was a prominent figure in the local
24	24	community, serving on the Kerrville Board of Adjustments and
25	25	Appeals for 27 years and on the board of trustees of the Kerrville
26	26	Public Utility Board; he was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and
27	27	took an active role at the First Presbyterian Church, where he was a
28	28	deacon, an elder, and an officer of the building committee; and
29	29	WHEREAS, A loving husband and devoted father, Mr. Whitton was
30	30	proud to share in the raising of his three children, Alan, Brian,
31	31	and Pam; he relished family gatherings, where he would greet his
32	32	grandsons with a new joke, listen to their stories, and regale them
33	33	with tales of hopping freight trains to Galveston and other
34	34	adventures from his youth; he also enjoyed hunting with family and
35	35	friends, viewing the beauty of nature, and watching his favorite
36	36	football teams, the UT Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Although Lester Whitton is deeply missed, he made an
38	38	indelible mark on the Kerrville area through his design work and
39	39	dedicated civic service, and his family and friends will long
40	40	remember his warmth and generosity and the many wonderful times
41	41	spent in his company; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
43	43	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Lester Booth Whitton
44	44	and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
45	45	wife of 62 years, Rachel Whitton; to his sons, Alan Whitton and his
46	46	wife, Marsha, and Brian Whitton; to his daughter, Pam Whitton, and
47	47	her husband, Jim Haymes; to his grandsons, Justin, Ryan, and Kevin
48	48	Whitton and Austin and Sean Haymes; to his sister, Anne W. Hill; to
49	49	his niece, Becky Hunt; and to his other relatives and friends; and,
50	50	be it further
51	51	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
52	52	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
53	53	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lester
54	54	Booth Whitton.
