| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Gabriela Isabel Diaz of Calallen Middle School in |

| 6 | 6 | | Corpus Christi achieved an exciting goal in May 2009 with her |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Puerto Rico, Gabriela Diaz relocated |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | with her family to the Lone Star State five years ago; she learned |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | English before coming to the United States, but she did not speak it |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | at home or outside of the classroom; she has since developed |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | outstanding proficiency in spelling, and in February 2009, this |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | talented 13-year-old won the Corpus Christi Caller-Times' regional |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | bee; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Shortly thereafter, Ms. Diaz began studying |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | rigorously for the prestigious national competition, even |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | practicing while jumping on a trampoline; at the event in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Washington, D.C., she skillfully represented the city of Corpus |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Christi, spelling such words as "haggard" and "molinary," and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | competing against 292 participants from across the U.S., as well as |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | countries like China, South Korea, and Canada; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Also a skilled musician, Ms. Diaz plays bass, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | contrabass, and standard clarinets, and she is the first-chair bass |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | clarinet in her school's band; her goals are to attend the Juilliard |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | School and to someday travel the world as a performer; she also |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | enjoys playing tennis and chess and spending time with her five cats |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and her pet turtle; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Diaz has proven herself to be a young woman of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | ability, determination, and poise under pressure, and she may |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | indeed look forward to a future that is bright with promise; now, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Gabriela Isabel Diaz on her |

| 34 | 34 | | participation in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee and extend |

| 35 | 35 | | to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; |
