81R38197 BPG-D By: Herrero H.R. No. 3070 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Arthur E. Hernandez, dean of the College of Education at Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi, has been named to the Texas Diabetes Council by Governor Rick Perry; and WHEREAS, Since it was established by the Texas Legislature in 1983, the Texas Diabetes Council has worked with private and public health care organizations to promote diabetes prevention and awareness throughout the state; the council also addresses issues affecting residents with diabetes and advises the legislature on legislation needed to develop and maintain a statewide system of quality education services for diabetes patients and health care professionals; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hernandez graduated from St. Mary's University in 1975 and went on to earn his master's degree in psychology with a clinical specialization at St. Mary's, as well as a master's degree in psychology with a specialization in curriculum and instruction from The University of Texas at San Antonio; he later received his doctorate in educational psychology from Texas A&M University and joined UTSA as an assistant professor in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in 1989; and WHEREAS, A skilled administrator as well as a dedicated educator, Dr. Hernandez became director of the interdisciplinary studies program at UTSA and then served as associate dean and chair of the department of education and human development from 2001 until 2009, when he accepted his current position at the Corpus Christi campus of Texas A&M; and WHEREAS, As dean of the College of Education at A&M--Corpus Christi, Dr. Hernandez supervises academic, faculty, and student affairs for the college and oversees the Early Childhood Development Center, the University Preparatory High School, the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education Center, and all education degree programs; a former chair of the Texas State Board of Psychologists, he is currently a member of the American Public Health Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Educational Research Association; and WHEREAS, Arthur Hernandez brings to this new appointment a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience, and his dedication and exceptional qualifications are sure to greatly benefit the important work of the Texas Diabetes Council; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Arthur Hernandez on his appointment to the Texas Diabetes Council and extend to him sincere best wishes for a successful tenure; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Hernandez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
