44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Texas is fortunate to have passionate and engaged
66 residents like Edward H. Harte of Corpus Christi, whose committed
77 environmental advocacy has made the state a better place in which to
88 live and raise a family; and
99 WHEREAS, Born in Missouri in 1922, Ed Harte grew up in San
1010 Angelo and earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College; he
1111 served in the weather wing of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World
1212 War II before beginning a career as a newspaper reporter; in 1952,
1313 he returned to San Angelo as president of the Standard-Times, and he
1414 went on to join the Corpus Christi Caller-Times; he accepted
1515 further responsibility through the years, ultimately serving as
1616 publisher of the paper from 1962 until his retirement in 1987; and
1717 WHEREAS, Along the way, Mr. Harte developed a keen interest
1818 in environmental issues and became active in such organizations as
1919 the Audubon Society, which he served as chair, and the American
2020 Farmland Trust, which he helped transform into a national
2121 organization; he was a key proponent of the establishment of both
2222 Mustang Island State Park and Padre Island National Seashore, and
2323 he worked with other concerned citizens to develop the first
2424 municipal regulations that set limits on oil and gas drilling in
2525 Corpus Christi Bay; moreover, he helped build the first statewide
2626 conservation group as a founding member of the Conservation
2727 Federation of Texas; and
2828 WHEREAS, Perhaps the greatest example of Mr. Harte's vision
2929 and generosity is his $46 million endowment to create the Harte
3030 Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M
3131 University-Corpus Christi; dedicated to supporting and advancing
3232 the long-term sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of
3333 Mexico, the institute has become a premier center for
3434 interdisciplinary research and public policy; and
3535 WHEREAS, Mr. Harte enjoyed the love and support of his wife,
3636 Janet, for more than half a century before her death in 1999;
3737 together they shared a love of birding and wildlife, which they
3838 encouraged in their four children on trips throughout the world;
3939 and
4040 WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of
4141 an individual's life, some people leave their unmistakable mark on
4242 the world as they move through it, and Ed Harte is indeed one such
4343 person; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4545 Legislature hereby honor Edward H. Harte on his outstanding
4646 contributions to the Lone Star State and extend to him sincere best
4747 wishes for the future; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for Mr. Harte as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5050 House of Representatives.
