55 WHEREAS, The 2009 Chicano Activist Convention is taking place
66 August 21 through 23, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency and Belmont Hotels
77 in Dallas; and
88 WHEREAS, Focusing on the theme "40 Years of Struggle (At
99 Least!)," the convention celebrates the legacy of the Chicano
1010 movement of the late 1960s and 1970s; and
1111 WHEREAS, During that dynamic period, Mexican American
1212 activists and a broad coalition of supporters joined together to
1313 bring about significant social and political change in the United
1414 States; and
1515 WHEREAS, The Chicano movement addressed urgent issues that
1616 included political representation, voting rights, educational
1717 reform, and the working conditions of farm laborers; by striving to
1818 achieve progress in those important areas, participants brought our
1919 nation closer to its ideals regarding civil rights and social
2020 justice and inspired a flowering of Latino culture that continues
2121 to the present; and
2222 WHEREAS, Though decades have passed since the height of the
2323 movement, its influence is still strongly felt in American life,
2424 and the experiences and achievements of the men and women who shaped
2525 that vibrant era are indeed deserving of recognition and
2626 celebration; now, therefore, be it
2727 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2828 Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Chicano Activist
2929 Convention and extend to the organizers and participants sincere
3030 best wishes for a productive and memorable gathering.
