| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The 2009 Chicano Activist Convention is taking place |

| 6 | 6 | | August 21 through 23, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency and Belmont Hotels |

| 7 | 7 | | in Dallas; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Focusing on the theme "40 Years of Struggle (At |

| 9 | 9 | | Least!)," the convention celebrates the legacy of the Chicano |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | movement of the late 1960s and 1970s; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, During that dynamic period, Mexican American |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | activists and a broad coalition of supporters joined together to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | bring about significant social and political change in the United |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | States; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The Chicano movement addressed urgent issues that |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | included political representation, voting rights, educational |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | reform, and the working conditions of farm laborers; by striving to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | achieve progress in those important areas, participants brought our |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | nation closer to its ideals regarding civil rights and social |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | justice and inspired a flowering of Latino culture that continues |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | to the present; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Though decades have passed since the height of the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | movement, its influence is still strongly felt in American life, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and the experiences and achievements of the men and women who shaped |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | that vibrant era are indeed deserving of recognition and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | celebration; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Chicano Activist |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Convention and extend to the organizers and participants sincere |
