5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Texas is the only state in the nation whose name |

6 | 6 | | officially refers to friends or friendship, as its name derives |

7 | 7 | | from the Caddo Indian word for friends; and |

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In February 1930, the Texas Legislature |

9 | 9 | | demonstrated great wisdom when it voted to officially designate our |
---|
10 | 10 | | state motto as "Friendship"; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The phenomenal friendliness and accompanying |
---|
12 | 12 | | extroversion of Texans are a most impressive cultural strength of |
---|
13 | 13 | | our state, calling to mind the words of President Lyndon B. Johnson |
---|
14 | 14 | | of Texas, who famously said "that there are no enemies in this |
---|
15 | 15 | | world, only potential friends"; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The cities of Eagle Pass, Dallas, and Burkburnett |
---|
17 | 17 | | each host annual friendship festivals and, for the first time, |
---|
18 | 18 | | Houston hosted a friendship festival in 2009 that is expected to |
---|
19 | 19 | | become an annual event; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Currently, there is no major statewide |
---|
21 | 21 | | friendship-themed annual civic event open to the general public; a |
---|
22 | 22 | | day devoted to friendship would promote a healthy dialogue about |
---|
23 | 23 | | personal friendships and enrich the lives of all participants; now, |
---|
24 | 24 | | therefore, be it |

25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | Legislature hereby recognize August 2, 2009, as Texas Friendship |
---|
27 | 27 | | Day and encourage all Texans to reflect on the meaning of |
---|
28 | 28 | | friendships in their own lives. |
