44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Texas is the only state in the nation whose name
66 officially refers to friends or friendship, as its name derives
77 from the Caddo Indian word for friends; and
88 WHEREAS, In February 1930, the Texas Legislature
99 demonstrated great wisdom when it voted to officially designate our
1010 state motto as "Friendship"; and
1111 WHEREAS, The phenomenal friendliness and accompanying
1212 extroversion of Texans are a most impressive cultural strength of
1313 our state, calling to mind the words of President Lyndon B. Johnson
1414 of Texas, who famously said "that there are no enemies in this
1515 world, only potential friends"; and
1616 WHEREAS, The cities of Eagle Pass, Dallas, and Burkburnett
1717 each host annual friendship festivals and, for the first time,
1818 Houston hosted a friendship festival in 2009 that is expected to
1919 become an annual event; and
2020 WHEREAS, Currently, there is no major statewide
2121 friendship-themed annual civic event open to the general public; a
2222 day devoted to friendship would promote a healthy dialogue about
2323 personal friendships and enrich the lives of all participants; now,
2424 therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2626 Legislature hereby recognize August 2, 2009, as Texas Friendship
2727 Day and encourage all Texans to reflect on the meaning of
2828 friendships in their own lives.
