5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The University Interscholastic League is |

6 | 6 | | celebrating its 100th anniversary beginning in the summer of 2009; |
---|
7 | 7 | | and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The organization traces its roots back to June 7, |
---|
9 | 9 | | 1909, when The University of Texas Board of Regents voted funds for |
---|
10 | 10 | | the creation of an extension bureau; this led to the establishment |
---|
11 | 11 | | of two programs, the Debating League of Texas High Schools and the |
---|
12 | 12 | | Interscholastic Athletic Association, which merged in 1913 to form |
---|
13 | 13 | | the University Interscholastic League; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Now operating under the vice president for diversity |
---|
15 | 15 | | and community engagement, the UIL is the largest organization of |
---|
16 | 16 | | its kind in the nation; providing Texas high school students with |
---|
17 | 17 | | opportunities for competition in academics, athletics, and music, |
---|
18 | 18 | | the organization oversees extracurricular contests in a wide array |
---|
19 | 19 | | of fields; by fostering a natural desire to excel, the competitions |
---|
20 | 20 | | encourage students to hone their talents and cultivate skills that |
---|
21 | 21 | | will forever enrich their lives; involvement in the UIL also helps |
---|
22 | 22 | | young people to develop such invaluable traits as self-confidence, |
---|
23 | 23 | | self-discipline, perseverance, and a sense of fair play; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The University Interscholastic League annually |
---|
25 | 25 | | provides over two million educational competition opportunities |
---|
26 | 26 | | for Texas student participants, and those who have shared in that |
---|
27 | 27 | | experience include Lyndon B. Johnson, Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Earl Campbell, Bill Moyers, and Sandra Day O'Connor; moreover, the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Texas Interscholastic League Foundation has presented scholarships |
---|
30 | 30 | | to gifted students taking part in the UIL Academic State Meet for |
---|
31 | 31 | | some five decades; today, the foundation annually awards more than |
---|
32 | 32 | | a million dollars in grants to over 600 students who will be |
---|
33 | 33 | | attending colleges and universities in Texas; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, At its centennial, the University Interscholastic |
---|
35 | 35 | | League remains an institution of immeasurable importance to |
---|
36 | 36 | | students in Texas public schools, and it is a privilege to recognize |
---|
37 | 37 | | its continuing role in shaping the future leaders of the Lone Star |
---|
38 | 38 | | State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
---|
41 | 41 | | University Interscholastic League and extend to all those |
---|
42 | 42 | | associated with the organization sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
43 | 43 | | success in all their endeavors; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the |

45 | 45 | | UIL as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
---|
46 | 46 | | Representatives. |
