6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Tyler lost a respected businessman and |

7 | 7 | | treasured member of the community with the death of Walden P. |
---|
8 | 8 | | Little, who passed away on May 6, 2009, at the age of 89; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Limestone County on March 14, 1920, to |
---|
10 | 10 | | Wilmer and Georgia Cates Little, "Red" Little graduated from |
---|
11 | 11 | | Grosbeck High School and Westminster Junior College; he answered |
---|
12 | 12 | | his nation's call to duty with service in the U.S. Army Air Corps |
---|
13 | 13 | | during World War II and moved to Tyler in 1950; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Little purchased a small insurance company in |
---|
15 | 15 | | 1954 and established it in Tyler as the East Texas Life and Accident |
---|
16 | 16 | | Insurance Company; business went well, and in 1965 the firm changed |
---|
17 | 17 | | its name to the Combined Underwriters Life Insurance Company and |
---|
18 | 18 | | continued its growth; by the turn of the 21st century, it had 35,000 |
---|
19 | 19 | | customers and 64 employees and held in force more than $80 million |
---|
20 | 20 | | in insurance; the company merged with Citizens Inc., an Austin |
---|
21 | 21 | | holding company, in 2002; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. |
---|
23 | 23 | | Little served as president of Texas Association of Life |
---|
24 | 24 | | Underwriters and the Texas Legal Reserve Officials Association; he |
---|
25 | 25 | | was twice elected to the Tyler City Commission and also twice served |
---|
26 | 26 | | a six-month term as the city's mayor; he was a director of Rotary |
---|
27 | 27 | | International and the founder of the Reading Enrichment and |
---|
28 | 28 | | Development Program at First Christian Church, where he was a |
---|
29 | 29 | | longtime member; moreover, he gave generously to Tyler Junior |
---|
30 | 30 | | College, Texas College, and The University of Texas at Tyler; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Little enjoyed the love |
---|
32 | 32 | | and support of his family, which includes his wife, Kim, a daughter, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Regina, and a son-in-law, Mark, as well as four grandchildren and |
---|
34 | 34 | | four great-grandchildren; Mrs. Little joined her husband in |
---|
35 | 35 | | philanthropic projects, and in 2004, the couple funded the |
---|
36 | 36 | | establishment of the Red and Kim Little Healthy Aging Lecture |
---|
37 | 37 | | Series; its annual presentations in Tyler continue to help senior |
---|
38 | 38 | | Texans lead robust lives; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Red Little was a man of vision, compassion, and |
---|
40 | 40 | | limitless good humor who endeared himself to all he met with his |
---|
41 | 41 | | positive outlook and creativity; although he will be deeply missed, |
---|
42 | 42 | | his legacy of skilled business leadership and civic service will |
---|
43 | 43 | | long resonate in the Tyler community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Walden P. Red Little |
---|
46 | 46 | | and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |
---|
47 | 47 | | wife, Kim Little; to his daughter, Regina Rooney, and her husband, |
---|
48 | 48 | | Mark; to his grandchildren, Laura, Stacye, Shannon, and Cameron; to |
---|
49 | 49 | | his great-grandchildren; to his brother, W. Sherill Little; and to |
---|
50 | 50 | | his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |

51 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

53 | 53 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Red Little. |
