5	5	WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close when Wilma
6	6	Phillips Hunter of San Antonio died on May 24, 2008, at the age of
7	7	88; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Karnes City, Wilma Phillips was the eighth
9	9	of 11 children of Collie and Nolvia Phillips; she was baptized into
10	10	the Church of the Living God in her hometown at a young age and
11	11	maintained a strong spiritual life in the ensuing years; and
12	12	WHEREAS, When she was 17 years old, she moved to the Alamo
13	13	City and married Ira Smith, with whom she had two beloved sons; in
14	14	1946, she exchanged wedding vows with Eddie Lee Hunter, beginning a
15	15	fulfilling marriage that spanned 35 years, until his passing; the
16	16	couple ran a thriving boardinghouse, and later Mrs. Hunter
17	17	reportedly became the first African American woman to own and
18	18	operate an upholstery business in San Antonio; the company, Hunter
19	19	Brothers Upholstery, which she and her husband developed, gained a
20	20	stellar reputation for quality work and drew prominent clients from
21	21	throughout Bexar County; and
22	22	WHEREAS, An esteemed citizen of San Antonio, Mrs. Hunter
23	23	cofounded the Altrusa Social Club and faithfully served the
24	24	congregation of Friendship Baptist Church as a member of the usher
25	25	board and choir; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Admired for her dynamic personality, can-do
27	27	attitude, and masterful storytelling ability, Wilma Hunter will
28	28	forever hold a treasured place in the hearts of all who were blessed
29	29	to share in her love and affection; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
31	31	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Wilma Phillips Hunter
32	32	and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
33	33	sons, Ira Smith, Jr., and his wife, Marvinette, and James Allen
34	34	Smith; to her sister, Katherine Hill, and her brother, Flenoy
35	35	Phillips, and his wife, Venetta; to her nine grandchildren and nine
36	36	great-grandchildren; and to her other relatives and friends; and,
37	37	be it further
38	38	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
39	39	prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
40	40	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Wilma
41	41	Phillips Hunter.
