| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Bee County are gathering at |

| 6 | 6 | | the State Capitol to celebrate Bee County Day on February 11, 2009; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Officially organized on January 25, 1858, Bee County |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | was named for Barnard E. Bee, Sr., a South Carolina attorney, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | soldier, and statesman who joined the Army of the Republic of Texas |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and served as secretary of war under Sam Houston; recovered |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | artifacts indicate that the area was originally inhabited 6,000 to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 10,000 years ago; the first permanent European settlers arrived in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the early 19th century, and 11 Bee County landowners were among the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Located in the South Texas Plains vegetation region, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Bee County covers 866 square miles that slope gently toward the Gulf |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Coast; with the region's open expanses of grasslands, the local |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | economy is dominated by farming and ranching but also welcomes oil |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and gas extraction and agribusiness; in 1954, the first U.S. Navy |

| 21 | 21 | | all-jet base opened at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Beeville, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the county seat, and still contributes a significant amount to the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | region's economy; other towns in the county include Skidmore, Blue |

| 24 | 24 | | Berry Hill, Pettus, Tuleta, Tynan, Pawnee, Normanna, and Mineral; |

| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The residents of this fine Texas county have played |

| 27 | 27 | | an important part in preserving their region's past and preparing |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | for a productive future, and it is a pleasure to pay tribute to Bee |

| 29 | 29 | | County and its citizens on this special day; now, therefore, be it |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 11, 2009, as Bee County Day |
