 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Citizens from Camp County are gathering to celebrate
 Camp County Day at the State Capitol on February 11, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, The third smallest county in Texas, Camp County is
 set among the lovely rolling timberlands of East Texas; the Caddo
 were the earliest residents in historical times, followed by the
 Creek, Choctaw, and Cherokee; and
 WHEREAS, Anglo settlers first moved into the area in the
 1830s; Pittsburg was founded in 1855 by Major William H. Pitts and
 became the county seat in 1874, when Camp County was carved out of
 Upshur County; the new jurisdiction was named for John Lafayette
 Camp, a state senator; and
 WHEREAS, While cotton and corn were important to the county's
 economy in its early years, today the area's chief products are
 poultry, livestock, peaches, and timber; Camp County is home to the
 headquarters of Pilgrim's Pride Corporation, the largest chicken
 producer in the nation; and
 WHEREAS, The county's many opportunities for recreation
 include fine bass fishing in area lakes; housed in Pittsburg's old
 rail depot, the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Center and Museum
 showcases the rich history of East Texas and features a replica of
 the Ezekiel Airship, a Biblically inspired early aircraft; the Ride
 with the Eagles bike rally in April has one of the most scenic
 cycling courses in the state, while the county's annual Chickfest
 celebrates the region's leadership in the poultry industry with a
 carnival, music, and street vendors; and
 WHEREAS, Preserving the best of their heritage while looking
 forward to the opportunities that lie ahead, the citizens of Camp
 County are to be commended for their industrious spirit and for
 their continuing contributions to the development of the Lone Star
 State; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize February 11, 2009, as Camp County Day
 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
 best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable stay in Austin.
