H.R. No. 437 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, On February 19, 2009, the Houston Food Bank is celebrating the contributions of 21 graduates of its warehouse certification On the Job Training program; and WHEREAS, The Houston Food Bank is the largest food bank in Texas and the fourth largest in the country; it distributes some 36 million pounds of food a year to nearly 500,000 people; the warehouse certification program draws from a pool of workers from the Texas Second Chance program who have demonstrated self-discipline and initiative; and WHEREAS, Developed with the assistance of the Windham School District, the OJT warehouse certification course provides 40 hours of classroom training as well as hands-on experience in the food bank's 73,000 square foot warehouse; while facilitating the operations of the food bank, OJT students hone their work habits, enhance their professionalism, and acquire skills in all facets of warehouse operation, including such positions as forklift operator, inventory clerk, and dock coordinator; graduates are eligible to participate in the Reaching Employment and Doing It Yourself program, a six-month vocational training program focusing on teamwork and taking on increasing responsibilities; and WHEREAS, The newest OJT graduates are: Calvin Adkins, Richard Bowker, Keith Bean, Calvin Carter, Brandon Clarke, Corey Conway, Willie Davis, Abanga Etuk, Dabram Harrell, Cedric Johnson, Pablo Martinez, Luis Monsivais, Jalal Nuriddin, John Powers, Reggy Wright, Lawrence Cooper, William Henry, Reginald Jones, Vincent Mitchell, Mark Rodriguez, and Mark Simpson; and WHEREAS, While preparing for advancement in the workforce, these men have provided exceptional service to the Houston Food Bank, helping the organization ensure that some 80,000 people each week receive vital nourishment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the graduates of the Houston Food Bank On the Job Training warehouse certification program and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared for the graduates as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
