H.R. No. 442
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Elaine Nicholas Lieck, a passionate supporter of the
Bexar County Democratic Party, passed away on February 7, 2009, at
the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, A native of Austin, the former Elaine Nicholas
attended Sul Ross State University and later married Charles Lieck
in 1952; the couple settled in San Antonio, and Mrs. Lieck became
active in the Democratic Party after her husband's election as a
state representative; she continued to work behind the scenes
during Mr. Lieck's tenure as Bexar County district attorney, and
she was instrumental in her husband's decision to hire the county's
first female and African American assistant district attorneys; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Lieck's home was a hub of activity during the
1960s, during which time she ran the Democratic Party offices and
worked on several political campaigns; she helped get G. J. Sutton
elected as the city's first African American state representative,
and she was the county coordinator for Lieutenant Governor Bill
Hobby; moreover, she was involved in the 1972 presidential campaign
of George McGovern; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her civic activism, Mrs. Lieck worked
on publicity for HemisFair and managed Karam's Kantina in Market
Square, and she was also the devoted mother of two sons, Chip and
Chris; and
WHEREAS, Elaine Lieck inspired others with her enthusiasm for
progressive politics and her efforts to make a positive difference
in the world, and she will long be remembered by all those who
shared in the richness of her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Elaine Nicholas
Lieck and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
her sons, Charles "Chip" Lieck III and Chris Lieck and his wife,
Julie Finck Lieck; to her grandchildren, Dylan and Hannah Lieck; to
her brother, Anthony Nicholas and his wife, B. A.; and to her other
relatives and many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elaine
Nicholas Lieck.
