55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, On February 18 and 19, 2009, members of the
77 Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nacogdoches, and the
88 Stephen F. Austin State University Student Government Association
99 and Alumni Association are visiting Austin to celebrate
1010 Nacogdoches-SFASU Days at the State Capitol; and
1111 WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is one of the oldest communities in the
1212 state, the site of a Caddo Indian settlement and a Spanish mission
1313 established in 1716; the city became an important gateway for trade
1414 with the French and later the Americans, and its lengthy list of
1515 Texas milestones includes the first newspaper, oil well, and
1616 two-story building, as well as the state's inaugural district court
1717 session; the nine flags flown over the city include those of three
1818 short-lived early republics; and
1919 WHEREAS, Today, the vintage charm of Nacogdoches brings
2020 myriad tourists, who explore such attractions as the Old Stone
2121 Fort, the Victorian homes along Mound Street, the 19th-century
2222 buildings of Millard's Crossing, and the quaint antique shops and
2323 restaurants along brick downtown streets; many also come to enjoy
2424 recreational activities at Lake Nacogdoches and Sam Rayburn
2525 Reservoir, known for their bass fishing; in addition to tourism,
2626 primary industries include agricultural services, manufacturing,
2727 and oil and gas; and
2828 WHEREAS, Education has been an important part of the area's
2929 economy since Stephen F. Austin State University opened its doors
3030 to 158 students on September 18, 1923; its alumni association was
3131 organized just five years later and has worked diligently through
3232 the years to support the school, which now has an enrollment of
3333 about 12,000 students; SFA boasts an exceptionally scenic campus
3434 and also operates a beef and poultry farm, a dairy farm, an
3535 experimental forest, and a forestry field station; its observatory
3636 is the second largest not only in Texas but also in the Central Time
3737 Zone; and
3838 WHEREAS, Beautifully situated in the Piney Woods of Deep East
3939 Texas, Nacogdoches has attracted countless older Texans; it was one
4040 of the first three communities in Texas recognized as a certified
4141 retirement community by a state program that evaluates such factors
4242 as cultural and sporting events, health care, safety, and
4343 continuing education opportunities; and
4444 WHEREAS, The combination of numerous amenities and a
4545 neighborly atmosphere makes Nacogdoches a splendid place indeed to
4646 live, work, and study, and it is a pleasure to welcome those
4747 representing the many facets of this vibrant part of the Lone Star
4848 State; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5050 Legislature hereby recognize February 18 and 19, 2009, as
5151 Nacogdoches-SFASU Days at the State Capitol and extend to the
5252 visiting delegation best wishes for a memorable stay in Austin;
5353 and, be it further
5454 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
5555 for the group as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
5656 Representatives.
