6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On February 18 and 19, 2009, members of the |

7 | 7 | | Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nacogdoches, and the |

8 | 8 | | Stephen F. Austin State University Student Government Association |
---|
9 | 9 | | and Alumni Association are visiting Austin to celebrate |
---|
10 | 10 | | Nacogdoches-SFASU Days at the State Capitol; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is one of the oldest communities in the |
---|
12 | 12 | | state, the site of a Caddo Indian settlement and a Spanish mission |
---|
13 | 13 | | established in 1716; the city became an important gateway for trade |
---|
14 | 14 | | with the French and later the Americans, and its lengthy list of |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas milestones includes the first newspaper, oil well, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | two-story building, as well as the state's inaugural district court |
---|
17 | 17 | | session; the nine flags flown over the city include those of three |
---|
18 | 18 | | short-lived early republics; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, the vintage charm of Nacogdoches brings |
---|
20 | 20 | | myriad tourists, who explore such attractions as the Old Stone |
---|
21 | 21 | | Fort, the Victorian homes along Mound Street, the 19th-century |
---|
22 | 22 | | buildings of Millard's Crossing, and the quaint antique shops and |
---|
23 | 23 | | restaurants along brick downtown streets; many also come to enjoy |
---|
24 | 24 | | recreational activities at Lake Nacogdoches and Sam Rayburn |
---|
25 | 25 | | Reservoir, known for their bass fishing; in addition to tourism, |
---|
26 | 26 | | primary industries include agricultural services, manufacturing, |
---|
27 | 27 | | and oil and gas; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Education has been an important part of the area's |
---|
29 | 29 | | economy since Stephen F. Austin State University opened its doors |
---|
30 | 30 | | to 158 students on September 18, 1923; its alumni association was |
---|
31 | 31 | | organized just five years later and has worked diligently through |
---|
32 | 32 | | the years to support the school, which now has an enrollment of |
---|
33 | 33 | | about 12,000 students; SFA boasts an exceptionally scenic campus |
---|
34 | 34 | | and also operates a beef and poultry farm, a dairy farm, an |
---|
35 | 35 | | experimental forest, and a forestry field station; its observatory |
---|
36 | 36 | | is the second largest not only in Texas but also in the Central Time |
---|
37 | 37 | | Zone; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Beautifully situated in the Piney Woods of Deep East |
---|
39 | 39 | | Texas, Nacogdoches has attracted countless older Texans; it was one |
---|
40 | 40 | | of the first three communities in Texas recognized as a certified |
---|
41 | 41 | | retirement community by a state program that evaluates such factors |
---|
42 | 42 | | as cultural and sporting events, health care, safety, and |
---|
43 | 43 | | continuing education opportunities; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, The combination of numerous amenities and a |
---|
45 | 45 | | neighborly atmosphere makes Nacogdoches a splendid place indeed to |
---|
46 | 46 | | live, work, and study, and it is a pleasure to welcome those |
---|
47 | 47 | | representing the many facets of this vibrant part of the Lone Star |
---|
48 | 48 | | State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 18 and 19, 2009, as |
---|
51 | 51 | | Nacogdoches-SFASU Days at the State Capitol and extend to the |
---|
52 | 52 | | visiting delegation best wishes for a memorable stay in Austin; |

53 | 53 | | and, be it further |

54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared |

55 | 55 | | for the group as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
