55 WHEREAS, Members of the organization Women of Tocqueville are
66 joining many concerned citizens from across Texas to commemorate
77 Prekindergarten Day at the State Capitol on February 17, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, Children who attend prekindergarten enter school
99 better prepared socially, emotionally, and intellectually; pre-k
1010 programs have been shown to have a positive impact on high school
1111 graduation rates, promoting a culture of learning and a standard
1212 for educational achievement; and
1313 WHEREAS, In addition, prekindergarten programs build a
1414 foundation for students in reading, math, science, and technology
1515 that will help pave the way for future success; and
1616 WHEREAS, With the recent downturn in the economy, working
1717 families are struggling more than ever to make ends meet, including
1818 covering the high costs of child care; access to high-quality
1919 prekindergarten allows parents to work without incurring the
2020 expense of child care, thereby enabling individuals to contribute
2121 their skills to the Texas workforce and to increase their financial
2222 stability; and
2323 WHEREAS, The Women of Tocqueville have contributed
2424 commendable support for prekindergarten programs, recognizing that
2525 children need a nurturing, structured environment early on to
2626 develop the study skills and work habits that are essential to a
2727 successful academic career and to greater opportunity; now,
2828 therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3030 Legislature hereby recognize February 17, 2009, as Prekindergarten
3131 Day and welcome the Women of Tocqueville to the State Capitol.
