No. 477 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Jose Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, has been named Mr. Amigo 2008 in recognition of his notable career, which has furthered the sport of boxing and brought great enjoyment to fight fans in both the United States and Mexico; and WHEREAS, Each year, the selection committee of the Mr. Amigo Association honors an individual who has advanced international friendship in addition to excelling in his or her profession, serving as a positive role model, and advocating improvement of the quality of life in the Hispanic community; the award was first given out in 1964 and has paid tribute to a long list of important and influential figures; and WHEREAS, Born on May 30, 1931, in Ciudad Victoria in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, Mr. Sulaiman has spent his life in the sport of boxing, beginning as a fighter during his youth; he soon found his way into the administrative ranks, becoming a local boxing commissioner in the state of San Luis Potosi while still in his teens, and he joined the World Boxing Council in 1968; his abilities allowed him to advance quickly through the organization, and in December 1975, he was elected the WBC president, a position he has held for more than 33 years; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sulaiman's leadership has brought about many advancements in boxing, including new regulations on equipment, weight classes, and the length of championship bouts in order to better safeguard the well-being of fighters; moreover, he has strengthened and expanded the WBC, which now serves more than 161 affiliated nations; and WHEREAS, Known for his support of humanitarian causes, he has been recognized by the United Nations for his efforts in the fight against Apartheid, and he has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame; these honors are representative of the great respect Jose Sulaiman has earned in the course of his long and accomplished career, and he is indeed deserving of the prestigious honor that is being presented to him by the Mr. Amigo Association; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Jose Sulaiman on being named Mr. Amigo 2008 and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Sulaiman as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
