| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jose Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing |

| 6 | 6 | | Council, has been named Mr. Amigo 2008 in recognition of his notable |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | career, which has furthered the sport of boxing and brought great |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | enjoyment to fight fans in both the United States and Mexico; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the selection committee of the Mr. Amigo |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Association honors an individual who has advanced international |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | friendship in addition to excelling in his or her profession, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | serving as a positive role model, and advocating improvement of the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | quality of life in the Hispanic community; the award was first given |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | out in 1964 and has paid tribute to a long list of important and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | influential figures; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Born on May 30, 1931, in Ciudad Victoria in the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Mexican state of Tamaulipas, Mr. Sulaiman has spent his life in the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | sport of boxing, beginning as a fighter during his youth; he soon |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | found his way into the administrative ranks, becoming a local |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | boxing commissioner in the state of San Luis Potosi while still in |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | his teens, and he joined the World Boxing Council in 1968; his |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | abilities allowed him to advance quickly through the organization, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and in December 1975, he was elected the WBC president, a position |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | he has held for more than 33 years; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sulaiman's leadership has brought about many |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | advancements in boxing, including new regulations on equipment, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | weight classes, and the length of championship bouts in order to |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | better safeguard the well-being of fighters; moreover, he has |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | strengthened and expanded the WBC, which now serves more than 161 |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | affiliated nations; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Known for his support of humanitarian causes, he has |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | been recognized by the United Nations for his efforts in the fight |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | against Apartheid, and he has been inducted into the World Boxing |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame; these honors |

| 35 | 35 | | are representative of the great respect Jose Sulaiman has earned in |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | the course of his long and accomplished career, and he is indeed |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | deserving of the prestigious honor that is being presented to him by |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | the Mr. Amigo Association; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jose Sulaiman on being named Mr. |

| 41 | 41 | | Amigo 2008 and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
