5	5	WHEREAS, The Lucy Rede Franco Middle School Band of Presidio
6	6	is performing in the Capitol Rotunda on February 19, 2009, in
7	7	celebration of STAR Day; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Established in 1999, the State of Texas Anniversary
9	9	Remembrance Day honors the occasion 163 years ago when the final act
10	10	of Texas annexation was played out; on February 19, 1846, the newly
11	11	elected members of the Texas Legislature gathered in Austin to
12	12	witness Anson Jones, president of the Republic of Texas, lower the
13	13	flag of the republic and raise the flag of the United States of
14	14	America; declaring "The Republic of Texas is no more," President
15	15	Jones formally transferred authority to the first governor of the
16	16	State of Texas, James Pinckney Henderson; and
17	17	WHEREAS, The band at Lucy Rede Franco Middle School has been
18	18	named The Spirit of STAR DAY 2009 School Band by The STAR DAY
19	19	Foundation of El Paso County; this outstanding group of young
20	20	musicians is ably led by band director Lucy Ferguson and enjoys the
21	21	enthusiastic support of the school's principal, Teresa Porras; and
22	22	WHEREAS, In creating STAR Day, Texas lawmakers sought to
23	23	foster an appreciation for the rich heritage of the Lone Star State
24	24	and to encourage an awareness among young Texans that their own
25	25	contributions will be vital to the continuing progress and
26	26	prosperity of this great land; with their Capitol concert, the Lucy
27	27	Rede Franco Middle School Band is bringing this important day to the
28	28	attention of a large and appreciative audience and marking this
29	29	special anniversary in truly memorable fashion; now, therefore, be
30	30	it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
32	32	Legislature hereby congratulate the Lucy Rede Franco Middle School
33	33	Band on its selection as The Spirit of STAR DAY 2009 School Band and
34	34	commemorate its performance at the Texas State Capitol on STAR Day
35	35	2009; and, be it further
36	36	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
37	37	prepared for the Lucy Rede Franco Middle School Band as an
38	38	expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
