| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The members of the First Baptist Church of Katy |

| 6 | 6 | | marked a momentous event in the history of their church with the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | celebration of its 110th anniversary on November 20, 2008; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Organized on that day in 1898 by 12 Katy pioneers, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the church was originally known as Zion Baptist; members met in the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | town's one-room schoolhouse and later held services in a building |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | owned by area Methodists; the Baptist congregation erected its |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | first sanctuary in 1914, and through the years, steady growth led to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the construction of several new facilities, including the church's |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | current home on Pin Oak Road; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The Reverend T. L. Scruggs served as the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | congregation's first pastor, and the church has since been blessed |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | with the inspired leadership of 31 ministers; today, that legacy |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | continues with the help of a talented ministerial staff that |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | includes senior pastor Dr. Randy White, minister to young adults |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Jeff Adams, minister to students Domenic Grotti, minister of music |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Walt Brown, minister of education Ed Jent, director of prayer and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | volunteer enlistment Margaret Edwards, and director of pastoral |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | care Martin Crowell; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Providing a spiritual home to some 3,000 local |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | residents, First Baptist also directs an annual outreach in Mexico, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | where it has established 12 mission churches; moreover, the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | congregation contributes to worldwide missions through its |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | membership in the Southern Baptist Convention; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, First Baptist Church of Katy has served as a source |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | of strength and guidance for more than a century, and the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | institution stands as a tribute to the faith and dedication of its |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | members, both past and present, who have devoted their time, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | prayers, and resources to ensure its continued existence; now, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby recognize the 110th anniversary of First Baptist |
