5	5	WHEREAS, A group from Baylor University is visiting the State
6	6	Capitol on February 19, 2009, and this occasion provides a fitting
7	7	opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this notable
8	8	institution; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Baylor University dates back to 1841, when 35
10	10	delegates at the Union Baptist Association meeting accepted a
11	11	proposal by the Reverend William Milton Tryon and State District
12	12	Judge R. E. B. Baylor to create a Baptist university in Texas; the
13	13	Texas Baptist Education Society later petitioned the Congress of
14	14	the Republic of Texas, and, on February 1, 1845, an act was signed
15	15	into law that officially established Baylor University; Reverend
16	16	Tryon and Judge Baylor are regarded as the founders of the
17	17	university, along with the Reverend James Huckins, who was the
18	18	first Baptist missionary to Texas and the university's first
19	19	full-time fund-raiser; each year in February, the Baylor University
20	20	community hosts a Founders Day celebration to commemorate the
21	21	anniversary of its charter; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Today, Baylor University is a nationally ranked
23	23	liberal arts institution with a population of more than 14,000
24	24	students working toward degrees in 145 areas of study; this private
25	25	college is small enough to offer its students personal attention
26	26	but large enough to feature Big 12 athletics programs and nearly 300
27	27	student organizations; the university places special emphasis on
28	28	community service, and students, faculty, and staff volunteer
29	29	countless hours in the Waco area; and
30	30	WHEREAS, For more than a century and a half, Baylor
31	31	University has provided its students with an outstanding education
32	32	and a solid foundation for future success and, in so doing, it has
33	33	contributed to the continued progress of the Lone Star State; now,
34	34	therefore, be it
35	35	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
36	36	Legislature hereby honor Baylor University and extend a warm
37	37	welcome to the representatives from the university who are present
38	38	in the State Capitol today; and, be it further
39	39	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
40	40	prepared for Baylor University as an expression of high regard by
41	41	the Texas House of Representatives.
