5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Many proud Northeast Texas residents are visiting |
---|
6 | 6 | | Austin to celebrate Rains County Day at the State Capitol on |
---|
7 | 7 | | February 24, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Rains County was created in the late 1800s from |
---|
9 | 9 | | Hopkins, Hunt, and Wood Counties; the county and its seat, Emory, |
---|
10 | 10 | | were named in honor of Emory Rains, an early pioneer who served in |
---|
11 | 11 | | the Congress of the Republic of Texas; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Situated between Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork |
---|
13 | 13 | | Reservoir, this lovely area is blessed with an abundant water |
---|
14 | 14 | | supply and fertile soil characteristic of the Blackland Prairie |
---|
15 | 15 | | region; the county initially prospered as a thriving agricultural |
---|
16 | 16 | | and ranching center and today enjoys a diverse economy that |
---|
17 | 17 | | includes oil production, manufacturing, and tourism; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Emory, which was originally known as Springville, is |
---|
19 | 19 | | now the largest town in Rains County with just over 1,000 people; it |
---|
20 | 20 | | is home to the Rains County Fair Grounds and the annual Eagle Fest |
---|
21 | 21 | | celebration held in February, when the county's lakes are the |
---|
22 | 22 | | winter home of many American bald eagles and other rare birds; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The city of Point was incorporated in the 1960s and |
---|
24 | 24 | | is recognized as the birthplace of the National Farmers Union, an |
---|
25 | 25 | | organization that has grown to include more than 300,000 members; |
---|
26 | 26 | | the 10 founding fathers of the NFU are memorialized by a historic |
---|
27 | 27 | | monument in the city which incorporates a statue of the union's |
---|
28 | 28 | | founder, Isaac Newton Gresham, and a display of the state flags of |
---|
29 | 29 | | the NFU's member states; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The county's youngest municipality, East Tawakoni, |
---|
31 | 31 | | was incorporated in the 1960s and has experienced significant |
---|
32 | 32 | | growth in recent years; this resort area offers residents the |
---|
33 | 33 | | benefits of a relaxed rural community while providing easy access |
---|
34 | 34 | | to Dallas; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Proof positive that good things do come in small |
---|
36 | 36 | | packages, Rains County has indeed played a vital role in the |
---|
37 | 37 | | development of the Lone Star State, and it is a pleasure to join |
---|
38 | 38 | | with our fellow Texans in saluting the county and its fine citizens; |
---|
39 | 39 | | now, therefore, be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 24, 2009, as Rains County Day |
---|
42 | 42 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation from |

43 | 43 | | Rains County sincere best wishes for an informative and memorable |
---|
