No. 542 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed cause for celebration, and Joel Davis Sugg, Jr., of Katy is marking that special milestone in his life on March 3, 2009; and WHEREAS, Born in Wellington in 1929 to Mary Bess Satterwhite Sugg and Joel Davis Sugg, Sr., Mr. Sugg is the grandson of Robert Lee Satterwhite, who served seven terms in the Texas House of Representatives, including one session as speaker; and WHEREAS, After graduating from Rice University in 1950, Mr. Sugg received his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps; he served in the Korean War as an artillery officer, then returned to Texas to train as a Marine aviator; and WHEREAS, While in flight school in Corpus Christi, Mr. Sugg met the love of his life, the former Stasia Olstowski, and they were married in 1954 at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in California; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sugg remained on active duty with the Marines until 1955, and then continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1962, when he retired at the rank of major; during the course of his military career, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, eight Air Medals, a Presidential Unit Citation, the Korean Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal; and WHEREAS, In 1970 Mr. Sugg founded the faith-based Country School in Katy, which he continued to run for 20 years; he also founded a small business, Schoolmaster Family Enterprises, to support the school's activities; and WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Sugg has been a devoted husband to his wife of nearly 55 years and a mentor and inspiration to his seven children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and it is indeed a pleasure to commend him on this special occasion; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Joel Davis Sugg, Jr., on his 80th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Sugg as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
