H.R. No. 560
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The legacy of the late Marion Martin Weaver of
Center continues to resonate in the community he was proud to call
home; and
WHEREAS, Born on March 9, 1921, to Marion and Stella Mae
Weaver, Martin Weaver graduated in 1937 from Center High School and
went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin; when his father
died in 1939, he and his brother, Malcolm, assumed the operation of
the family's lumber company, eventually transforming it into one of
the most well-known lumberyards in East Texas; together they built
and financed homes in Shelby, San Augustine, Panola, and Sabine
Counties, including the Greenwood and Lakewood subdivisions in
Center; and
WHEREAS, The brothers were also instrumental in the growth of
the broiler industry in Shelby County in the late 1940s; Martin
Weaver designed and built the first broiler house in the area and
later cooperated with feed companies and farmers to build numerous
others; in just two decades, the county gained recognition as one of
the broiler capitals of the Southwest and as the number one
egg-producing county in the state; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weaver further distinguished himself as a World
War II veteran and as the founder of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in
Shelby County; moreover, he served on the Center City Council and
was a member of the Rotary Club and First Christian Church; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Weaver shared more than
four decades with his wife, Joy, and the couple were the proud
parents of a daughter, Joy Ann Weaver Havran; Mr. Weaver also
enjoyed many friendships through the years; he was known for his
thoughtful and caring nature as well as for living by the messages
found in two favorite songs, "Give the World a Smile" and "Have a
Little Faith in Jesus"; and
WHEREAS, Although Mr. Weaver's death on June 10, 1982,
brought great sadness to the people of Shelby County, his
outstanding contributions have not been forgotten, and it is indeed
fitting to honor the memory of this esteemed Texan; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marion Martin Weaver;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Martin
Weaver.
