5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Shelby County Day is being celebrated at the State |
---|
6 | 6 | | Capitol on February 26, 2009, and this occasion provides a fine |
---|
7 | 7 | | opportunity to pay tribute to this unique region of the Lone Star |
---|
8 | 8 | | State; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Located alongside the Toledo Bend Reservoir on the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Sabine River, the territory that now makes up Shelby County has |
---|
11 | 11 | | drawn people for thousands of years; the Caddo were the chief |
---|
12 | 12 | | inhabitants of the region by the time Spanish and French explorers |
---|
13 | 13 | | arrived, and the first non-Native American settlers established |
---|
14 | 14 | | farms in the late 1810s; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The area was organized as Tenehaw Municipality in |
---|
16 | 16 | | 1835, when Texas was still a part of Mexico, but it was renamed as |
---|
17 | 17 | | Shelby County when it became one of the original counties of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Republic of Texas in 1836; its name was a tribute to Isaac Shelby, a |
---|
19 | 19 | | hero of the American Revolution; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the county's history, agriculture and |
---|
21 | 21 | | livestock have been mainstays of the local economy; the ample |
---|
22 | 22 | | forests of the area are another major asset, supporting jobs in |
---|
23 | 23 | | lumber processing and wood-product manufacturing and also drawing |
---|
24 | 24 | | tourists; the Sabine National Forest is a favorite destination for |
---|
25 | 25 | | outdoor recreation, as is Toledo Bend Reservoir, a quality spot for |
---|
26 | 26 | | boating and fishing; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Center, the largest town, has been the county seat |
---|
28 | 28 | | since 1866; it is home to the Shelby County Museum and the former |
---|
29 | 29 | | Shelby County Courthouse, a castle-like structure constructed in |
---|
30 | 30 | | 1885 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy a variety of |
---|
32 | 32 | | special events that dot the county's annual calendar, including the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Center Fly-In, which is held in May, the Shelby County Sheriff's |
---|
34 | 34 | | Posse PRCA Rodeo in June, the What-A-Melon Festival in July, and the |
---|
35 | 35 | | East Texas Poultry Festival in October; thanks to its year-round |
---|
36 | 36 | | charm and diverse amenities, Shelby County is now also a certified |
---|
37 | 37 | | retirement community; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, From the time of its establishment 173 years ago, |
---|
39 | 39 | | Shelby County has contributed to the rich and meaningful saga of the |
---|
40 | 40 | | Lone Star State, and its citizens can be proud to claim allegiance |
---|
41 | 41 | | to this scenic part of East Texas; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 26, 2009, as Shelby County |
---|
44 | 44 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best |
---|
45 | 45 | | wishes for the future. |
