44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The 70th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed
66 cause for celebration, and William Dair Power of Marshall is
77 commemorating this important milestone on February 23, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, In 1939, "Buddy" Power was born to Earl Dair and
99 Irene Power in Harrison County, where six generations of the Power
1010 family have lived; as a young boy of 12, he was spared from a fatal
1111 automobile accident and he committed his life to Christ; he began
1212 working at an early age and went on to graduate from Marshall High
1313 School in 1958, immediately joining the Texas Highway Department as
1414 a party chief and later working in engineering; he answered his
1515 nation's call to duty and served in the U.S. Army until 1962; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Power was employed by ALCOA as a Planner during
1717 the 1960s, and in 1972 he followed in his father's footsteps and
1818 entered the grocery business, becoming the owner and operator of
1919 Power Grocery; he later organized rural transportation and Meals on
2020 Wheels service for citizens all across Northeast Texas; seeing his
2121 neighbors in need of water service, Mr. Power purchased Rolling
2222 Acres Water Supply, and later used the expertise he had gained there
2323 to modernize and expand Leigh Water Supply, providing quality water
2424 and extending service to several hundred residents of Harrison
2525 County; and
2626 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community, Mr. Power began serving
2727 on the County Commissioners Court for Precinct 2 in 1983 and held
2828 the position for more than a decade; he was elected to his first
2929 term as a Marshall City Commissioner in 2007, and the following year
3030 he was elected by his colleagues as Commission Chair, a position
3131 commonly referred to as Mayor of Marshall; and
3232 WHEREAS, Mr. Power has also taken on leadership roles with
3333 numerous other civic organizations and committees, including the
3434 North and East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association,
3535 which he served as Chairman, the Texas Independence Express Depot
3636 Restoration Committee, the State Sesquicentennial Committee, the
3737 Cypress Valley Navigation District, which he served as Chairman,
3838 and the State of Texas County Judges and Commissioners Legislative
3939 Affairs Committee, which he served as Chairman; and
4040 WHEREAS, Burdened by the number of juveniles being
4141 incarcerated alongside hardened criminals in Texas jails, Mr. Power
4242 worked with the Governor to develop alternatives to house and
4343 rehabilitate juvenile offenders; and
4444 WHEREAS, Mr. Power has served his Lord and his community
4545 faithfully for decades, working in the background to help those in
4646 need, and he is a valued member of Central Baptist Church; and
4747 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Power enjoys the love
4848 and support of his wife of more than 30 years, Diana, and the
4949 couple's three children, Leslie, Bill, and Cherry; moreover, he has
5050 taken great pleasure in welcoming into his family six
5151 grandchildren, Victoria, Brooke, Shelby, Nikki, Justin, and
5252 Jonathan; and
5353 WHEREAS, Buddy Power has made lasting contributions to the
5454 city of Marshall, and he has justly garnered the respect and
5555 admiration of his neighbors, friends, and colleagues; now,
5656 therefore, be it
5757 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5858 Legislature hereby honor William Dair "Buddy" Power on the occasion
5959 of his 70th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for
6060 continued success and happiness; and, be it further
6161 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6262 prepared for Mr. Power as an expression of high regard by the Texas
6363 House of Representatives.
