5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the sad loss of
6	6	realtor and community leader Joseph Alan Stivers of Huntsville, who
7	7	died on October 10, 2008, at the age of 60; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Joe Stivers was born on January 20, 1948, to Frank
9	9	and Elizabeth Stivers; he grew up in Houston and spent his
10	10	adolescence in Germany and Switzerland; he attended Wharton Junior
11	11	College and graduated from Sam Houston State University with a
12	12	degree in journalism; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Mr. Stivers began his professional career working
14	14	for Holiday Inn and highlighting local clubs and restaurants in
15	15	"Huntsville After Dark," his column for the Huntsville Item; he
16	16	then worked for Kansas City Life Insurance Company; and
17	17	WHEREAS, After working with several real estate brokers, he
18	18	started his own company, Joe Stivers and Associates, and later
19	19	purchased and served as principal broker of Elkins Lake Real
20	20	Estate; he also served on the Huntsville Board of Realtors; and
21	21	WHEREAS, An active and engaged member of his community, Mr.
22	22	Stivers served on the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce,
23	23	where he was elected president in 1998; he was an esteemed 21-year
24	24	member of the Rotary Club, which recognized him as a Paul Harris
25	25	Fellow; he also served as chair of the annual Lobster Fiesta for a
26	26	number of years; and
27	27	WHEREAS, This outstanding Texan loved politics and was the
28	28	Walker County chair of the Republican Party from 1980 until the
29	29	early 1990s, attending both state and national conventions; he was
30	30	appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Texas Commission on Law
31	31	Enforcement Officer Standards and Education in 1997, was
32	32	reappointed by Governor Rick Perry, and served until 2007; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Joe Stivers was a keen student of genealogy and the
34	34	history of Texas; he treasured the time he spent with his family and
35	35	friends, and those he leaves behind will in turn cherish their
36	36	memories of the time they spent in his company; now, therefore, be
37	37	it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
39	39	Legislature hereby honor the life of Joseph Alan Stivers and extend
40	40	sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife of 32
41	41	years, Maria Teresa Torres Stivers; to his son, Alexander Torres
42	42	Stivers; to his daughter, Sonya Kay Holder, and her husband, Jerry;
43	43	to his grandchildren, Justin Holder, Madeleine Holder, and Drew
44	44	Holder; to his sister, Eileen Callaway; to his nephew, Christopher
45	45	Scott Callaway, and his wife, Christina, and son, Quinn; to his
46	46	niece, Marisa Callaway, and her husband, Matt Buckner; and to his
47	47	other relatives and friends; and, be it further
48	48	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
49	49	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
50	50	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joseph Alan
51	51	Stivers.
