44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the sad loss of
66 realtor and community leader Joseph Alan Stivers of Huntsville, who
77 died on October 10, 2008, at the age of 60; and
88 WHEREAS, Joe Stivers was born on January 20, 1948, to Frank
99 and Elizabeth Stivers; he grew up in Houston and spent his
1010 adolescence in Germany and Switzerland; he attended Wharton Junior
1111 College and graduated from Sam Houston State University with a
1212 degree in journalism; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Stivers began his professional career working
1414 for Holiday Inn and highlighting local clubs and restaurants in
1515 "Huntsville After Dark," his column for the Huntsville Item; he
1616 then worked for Kansas City Life Insurance Company; and
1717 WHEREAS, After working with several real estate brokers, he
1818 started his own company, Joe Stivers and Associates, and later
1919 purchased and served as principal broker of Elkins Lake Real
2020 Estate; he also served on the Huntsville Board of Realtors; and
2121 WHEREAS, An active and engaged member of his community, Mr.
2222 Stivers served on the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce,
2323 where he was elected president in 1998; he was an esteemed 21-year
2424 member of the Rotary Club, which recognized him as a Paul Harris
2525 Fellow; he also served as chair of the annual Lobster Fiesta for a
2626 number of years; and
2727 WHEREAS, This outstanding Texan loved politics and was the
2828 Walker County chair of the Republican Party from 1980 until the
2929 early 1990s, attending both state and national conventions; he was
3030 appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Texas Commission on Law
3131 Enforcement Officer Standards and Education in 1997, was
3232 reappointed by Governor Rick Perry, and served until 2007; and
3333 WHEREAS, Joe Stivers was a keen student of genealogy and the
3434 history of Texas; he treasured the time he spent with his family and
3535 friends, and those he leaves behind will in turn cherish their
3636 memories of the time they spent in his company; now, therefore, be
3737 it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby honor the life of Joseph Alan Stivers and extend
4040 sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife of 32
4141 years, Maria Teresa Torres Stivers; to his son, Alexander Torres
4242 Stivers; to his daughter, Sonya Kay Holder, and her husband, Jerry;
4343 to his grandchildren, Justin Holder, Madeleine Holder, and Drew
4444 Holder; to his sister, Eileen Callaway; to his nephew, Christopher
4545 Scott Callaway, and his wife, Christina, and son, Quinn; to his
4646 niece, Marisa Callaway, and her husband, Matt Buckner; and to his
4747 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5050 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joseph Alan
5151 Stivers.
