| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Abernathy are celebrating the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | centennial of their community on the Fourth of July, 2009; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Situated under the wide-open skies of the Llano |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Estacado, Abernathy was founded when the Santa Fe Railroad extended |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | its line from Plainview to Lubbock; M. G. Abernathy, J. C. Roberds, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and Marvin C. Overton created the South Plains Investment Company |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | to promote the town, which was officially platted on July 8, 1909; |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Many of the town's original buildings were moved |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | there from a nearby community, Bartonsite; by 1910, Abernathy had a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | post office, and by 1914 it claimed a population of 300, as well as |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | four churches, several businesses, and a bank; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Over its first two decades, Abernathy developed into |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | a center for cotton and grain processing; incorporated in 1924, the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | town boasted a flour mill during the 1920s and 1930s, and from 1929 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | to 1951, a cheese factory processed as much as 1,800 pounds of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | cheese a day; oil was discovered near the town in 1946; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Today Abernathy continues to grow, with a new |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | housing development, and a recently completed 38-acre park, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | featuring a fishing pond, playgrounds, and ball fields; residents |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | also enjoy the benefits of a school system that excels in both |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | academics and athletics; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The 100th anniversary of Abernathy's founding |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | provides a fine opportunity to recognize this outstanding community |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and to honor its citizens for their industry, their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | accomplishments, and their public spirit; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Abernathy's centennial and extend |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | to the town's residents sincere best wishes for a memorable and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | meaningful birthday celebration; and, be it further |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | prepared for the city of Abernathy as an expression of high regard |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | by the Texas House of Representatives. |
