44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Black History Month observances are taking place
66 during February 2009, and this occasion provides a fitting
77 opportunity to pay tribute to celebrated rodeo rider Harold Cash of
88 Texas City for his achievements as a champion cowboy and community
99 leader; and
1010 WHEREAS, Born in Galveston County on December 26, 1948,
1111 Harold Cash grew up during the era when the civil rights movement
1212 was bringing about significant changes in the United States, and he
1313 drew inspiration from the campaign for greater equality; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Cash began his rodeo career in 1967 as a
1515 competitor in the All-American Rodeo Association; he won acclaim
1616 for his exceptional abilities in bareback riding, considered one of
1717 the most demanding rodeo events; courageously riding powerful,
1818 untamed horses without the benefit of a saddle or reins, he turned
1919 in championship-winning performances that thrilled rodeo fans in
2020 major cities all across the nation and earned the lasting respect of
2121 his fellow cowboys; and
2222 WHEREAS, The success Mr. Cash enjoyed in the rodeo arena made
2323 him a role model, and he has since devoted himself to serving as a
2424 mentor to area young people; he has placed a special emphasis on
2525 providing educational assistance to those of limited financial
2626 means, and his efforts have included seeking support for
2727 scholarship programs and other initiatives among the members of the
2828 rodeo community; and
2929 WHEREAS, Mr. Cash was a longtime employee at Amoco, and he
3030 retired from the company after 27 years of service; in recent years,
3131 his activities have included work with the Over the Hill and Future
3232 Cowboy Rodeo Association, based in Texas City, and his
3333 contributions to that nonprofit organization have provided further
3434 benefits to the residents of Galveston County; and
3535 WHEREAS, Harold Cash is a living legend who has helped
3636 underscore the significant role that African Americans have played
3737 in the sport of rodeo and in other aspects of the Lone Star State's
3838 western heritage, and his many accomplishments are indeed deserving
3939 of recognition; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4141 Legislature hereby pay tribute to Harold Cash for his
4242 accomplishments as a rodeo cowboy and civic leader and extend to him
4343 sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
4444 further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for Mr. Cash as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4747 House of Representatives.
