5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Black History Month observances are taking place |
---|
6 | 6 | | during February 2009, and this occasion provides a fitting |
---|
7 | 7 | | opportunity to pay tribute to celebrated rodeo rider Harold Cash of |
---|
8 | 8 | | Texas City for his achievements as a champion cowboy and community |
---|
9 | 9 | | leader; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in Galveston County on December 26, 1948, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Harold Cash grew up during the era when the civil rights movement |
---|
12 | 12 | | was bringing about significant changes in the United States, and he |
---|
13 | 13 | | drew inspiration from the campaign for greater equality; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cash began his rodeo career in 1967 as a |
---|
15 | 15 | | competitor in the All-American Rodeo Association; he won acclaim |
---|
16 | 16 | | for his exceptional abilities in bareback riding, considered one of |
---|
17 | 17 | | the most demanding rodeo events; courageously riding powerful, |
---|
18 | 18 | | untamed horses without the benefit of a saddle or reins, he turned |
---|
19 | 19 | | in championship-winning performances that thrilled rodeo fans in |
---|
20 | 20 | | major cities all across the nation and earned the lasting respect of |
---|
21 | 21 | | his fellow cowboys; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The success Mr. Cash enjoyed in the rodeo arena made |
---|
23 | 23 | | him a role model, and he has since devoted himself to serving as a |
---|
24 | 24 | | mentor to area young people; he has placed a special emphasis on |
---|
25 | 25 | | providing educational assistance to those of limited financial |
---|
26 | 26 | | means, and his efforts have included seeking support for |
---|
27 | 27 | | scholarship programs and other initiatives among the members of the |
---|
28 | 28 | | rodeo community; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cash was a longtime employee at Amoco, and he |
---|
30 | 30 | | retired from the company after 27 years of service; in recent years, |
---|
31 | 31 | | his activities have included work with the Over the Hill and Future |
---|
32 | 32 | | Cowboy Rodeo Association, based in Texas City, and his |
---|
33 | 33 | | contributions to that nonprofit organization have provided further |
---|
34 | 34 | | benefits to the residents of Galveston County; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Harold Cash is a living legend who has helped |
---|
36 | 36 | | underscore the significant role that African Americans have played |
---|
37 | 37 | | in the sport of rodeo and in other aspects of the Lone Star State's |
---|
38 | 38 | | western heritage, and his many accomplishments are indeed deserving |
---|
39 | 39 | | of recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to Harold Cash for his |
---|
42 | 42 | | accomplishments as a rodeo cowboy and civic leader and extend to him |
---|
43 | 43 | | sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
