44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of Del Rio lost a visionary physician and
66 a treasured member of the community with the passing of Dr. Manuel
77 Adrian Martinez, Jr., on August 29, 2008, at the age of 77; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Del Rio, Manuel Martinez was born to
99 Manuel and Concepcion Martinez on July 22, 1931; he graduated from
1010 Sacred Heart Academy in 1951 as valedictorian of his class and
1111 answered his nation's call to duty by serving in the U.S. Army from
1212 1953 to 1955; and
1313 WHEREAS, Following his military service, Dr. Martinez
1414 attended St. Mary's University in San Antonio on a full academic
1515 scholarship; he went on to earn his medical degree at the Autonomous
1616 University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico and became licensed as a general
1717 practitioner, surgeon, and OB/GYN before returning to Del Rio to
1818 open his practice; over the course of his distinguished career, he
1919 delivered more than 12,000 babies, some 2,500 of which were born in
2020 Dr. Martinez's own birthing clinic; and
2121 WHEREAS, This esteemed physician became a leading figure in
2222 area health initiatives, serving as a medical director for Del Rio,
2323 Val Verde County, and the state health department; he played a
2424 pivotal role in the 1980 creation of the Amistad Binational Health
2525 Council, a local chapter of the U.S.-Mexico Border Health
2626 Association, and he served as its first copresident; even after he
2727 retired from his regular practice, he continued to assist in the
2828 county's medical endeavors; in recognition of his multitude of
2929 contributions to Del Rio and its surrounding communities, the
3030 Amistad Binational Health Council established Dr. Manuel A.
3131 Martinez Binational Health Week in his honor; and
3232 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Dr. Martinez enjoyed the
3333 love and support of his wife, the former Blanca Estella Garza; the
3434 couple were blessed with four children, Blanca, Evette Michelle,
3535 Manuel, and Lina, and had the pleasure of welcoming eight
3636 grandchildren into their family; and
3737 WHEREAS, Dr. Manuel Martinez was a skilled and caring doctor
3838 who devoted his professional life to assisting his fellow citizens,
3939 and his exceptional career will continue to serve as an inspiration
4040 to aspiring physicians and community leaders alike; now, therefore,
4141 be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Manuel Adrian
4444 Martinez, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
4545 family: to his wife, Blanca Estella Garza Martinez; to his
4646 children, Blanca Mollai and her husband, Saeid, Michelle O'Donnell
4747 and her husband, Brian, Manuel Adrian Martinez III and his wife,
4848 Lisa, and Lina Ramon and her husband, Martin; to his grandchildren,
4949 Ariana, Catalina, and Isabella Mollai, Sky, Brandon, and Hudson
5050 O'Donnell, Alaina Martinez, and Idol Ramon; to his siblings,
5151 Consuelo Paredes and Robert, Odilia, and Ricardo Martinez; and to
5252 his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5353 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5454 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5555 Representatives adjourns on this day, it do so in memory of Dr.
