5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The life and legacy of a beloved community leader |
---|
6 | 6 | | were commemorated with the dedication of Lucile McKee Hendricks |
---|
7 | 7 | | Elementary School in McAllen on February 8, 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The new 66,000-square-foot school in the McAllen |
---|
9 | 9 | | Independent School District has a capacity of about 700 students |
---|
10 | 10 | | and a current enrollment of almost 500; the campus features an |
---|
11 | 11 | | energy-efficient design, state-of-the-art computer labs, and a |
---|
12 | 12 | | large cafetorium; it opened its doors for classes in August 2008; |
---|
13 | 13 | | and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Honoring "McAllen's First Lady," the school is named |
---|
15 | 15 | | after Lucile Hendricks, a tireless advocate for children and |
---|
16 | 16 | | quality education who died in 2007 at the age of 98; as a young |
---|
17 | 17 | | mother, Mrs. Hendricks began attending school board meetings and |
---|
18 | 18 | | went on to win election as the first woman on the school board, thus |
---|
19 | 19 | | becoming the first female elected official in Hidalgo County; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Hendricks served three terms on the school |
---|
21 | 21 | | board and became its first female president in 1959; this dynamic |
---|
22 | 22 | | Texan also worked in the family construction business, which she |
---|
23 | 23 | | ran after the death of her husband, and through the years she served |
---|
24 | 24 | | on several civic commissions and gave generously of her time and |
---|
25 | 25 | | talents to numerous political, cultural, and philanthropic |
---|
26 | 26 | | organizations; her family members have donated books to the new |
---|
27 | 27 | | school's library; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Lucile Hendricks was an outstanding role model |
---|
29 | 29 | | throughout her long life, and she left an indelible imprint on the |
---|
30 | 30 | | city of McAllen; it is indeed fitting that an elementary school |
---|
31 | 31 | | should bear the name of this industrious and dedicated citizen; |
---|
32 | 32 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of Lucile McKee |
---|
35 | 35 | | Hendricks Elementary School in McAllen and extend sincere best |
---|
36 | 36 | | wishes to all those associated with this fine institution of |
---|
37 | 37 | | learning; and, be it further |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
