44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The life and legacy of a beloved community leader
66 were commemorated with the dedication of Lucile McKee Hendricks
77 Elementary School in McAllen on February 8, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, The new 66,000-square-foot school in the McAllen
99 Independent School District has a capacity of about 700 students
1010 and a current enrollment of almost 500; the campus features an
1111 energy-efficient design, state-of-the-art computer labs, and a
1212 large cafetorium; it opened its doors for classes in August 2008;
1313 and
1414 WHEREAS, Honoring "McAllen's First Lady," the school is named
1515 after Lucile Hendricks, a tireless advocate for children and
1616 quality education who died in 2007 at the age of 98; as a young
1717 mother, Mrs. Hendricks began attending school board meetings and
1818 went on to win election as the first woman on the school board, thus
1919 becoming the first female elected official in Hidalgo County; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hendricks served three terms on the school
2121 board and became its first female president in 1959; this dynamic
2222 Texan also worked in the family construction business, which she
2323 ran after the death of her husband, and through the years she served
2424 on several civic commissions and gave generously of her time and
2525 talents to numerous political, cultural, and philanthropic
2626 organizations; her family members have donated books to the new
2727 school's library; and
2828 WHEREAS, Lucile Hendricks was an outstanding role model
2929 throughout her long life, and she left an indelible imprint on the
3030 city of McAllen; it is indeed fitting that an elementary school
3131 should bear the name of this industrious and dedicated citizen;
3232 now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3434 Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of Lucile McKee
3535 Hendricks Elementary School in McAllen and extend sincere best
3636 wishes to all those associated with this fine institution of
3737 learning; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4040 House of Representatives.
