| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Chemical Council and the Association of |

| 6 | 6 | | Chemical Industry of Texas are sponsoring Texas Chemicals Day at |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the State Capitol on February 26, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The chemical industry directly employs more than |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 75,000 people in Texas; it also employs indirectly some half a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | million Texans, including contractors, suppliers, distributors, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and other support personnel; in addition, it contributes to the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | state's economy by paying over $1 billion in state and local taxes |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and more than $6 billion in salaries and benefits; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Texas is the nation's largest chemical producer, and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | chemicals are the Lone Star State's top export; the $35 billion in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | chemicals exported from Texas each year represents more than 20 |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | percent of the state's total exports; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Chemical Council was organized in 1953 and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | holds the distinction of being the country's first trade |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | association representing the common interests of industry members |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | at the state level; ACIT includes manufacturers and suppliers |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | working as a united industry; both TCC and ACIT address such issues |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | as energy policy, environmental protection, taxes, and workforce; |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A vital component in myriad consumer items, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | chemicals are used in the manufacture of such diverse products as |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | airplanes, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, computers, electronics, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | clothing fibers, solar panels, light bulbs, and high-performance |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | building materials, and Texas Chemicals Day promotes awareness |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | about the importance of chemistry and chemical products in our |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | everyday lives; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 26, 2009, as Texas Chemicals |

| 34 | 34 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the Texas |
