5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Autism Council for Educational |

6 | 6 | | Support and Scientific Studies and the Rio Grande Valley Task Force |

7 | 7 | | of the Texas Council on Autism and Pervasive Developmental |

8 | 8 | | Disorders are visiting the State Capitol on February 26, 2009, |
---|
9 | 9 | | providing a welcome opportunity to honor these notable |
---|
10 | 10 | | organizations; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, "Pervasive developmental disorders" refers to a |
---|
12 | 12 | | group of disorders characterized by delays in the development of |
---|
13 | 13 | | socialization and communication skills; autism, the most common of |
---|
14 | 14 | | these disorders, is the result of a neurological disorder that |
---|
15 | 15 | | affects the functioning of the brain and impacts normal development |
---|
16 | 16 | | of social interaction and communication skills; autism typically |
---|
17 | 17 | | appears during the first three years of life and affects as many as |
---|
18 | 18 | | six per 1,000 individuals; other pervasive developmental disorders |
---|
19 | 19 | | include Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Rett syndrome, and PDD-not otherwise specified; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Council on Autism and Pervasive |
---|
22 | 22 | | Developmental Disorders was established by legislation in 1987 and |
---|
23 | 23 | | works to ensure that the needs of persons with autism and other |
---|
24 | 24 | | pervasive developmental disorders and their families are |
---|
25 | 25 | | addressed; task forces located throughout the state advise the |
---|
26 | 26 | | council on a range of issues, and the council in turn makes |
---|
27 | 27 | | recommendations to state agencies and the state legislature; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Organized to improve autism services, education, |
---|
29 | 29 | | and research in the Rio Grande Valley, the Autism Council for |
---|
30 | 30 | | Educational Support and Scientific Studies consists of parents of |
---|
31 | 31 | | children with autism, as well as professionals who regularly work |
---|
32 | 32 | | with the autism spectrum disorders population; the Autism Council |
---|
33 | 33 | | seeks to facilitate the development of an informed and united |
---|
34 | 34 | | community, and as such, hosts a monthly autism support group; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Through their efforts to raise awareness of these |
---|
36 | 36 | | prevalent developmental disabilities, members of the Autism |
---|
37 | 37 | | Council for Educational Support and Scientific Studies and the Rio |
---|
38 | 38 | | Grande Valley Task Force of the Texas Council on Autism and |
---|
39 | 39 | | Pervasive Developmental Disorders are making a positive difference |
---|
40 | 40 | | in the lives of South Texans, and they are indeed deserving of |
---|
41 | 41 | | recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby honor the Autism Council for Educational Support |
---|
44 | 44 | | and Scientific Studies and the Rio Grande Valley Task Force of the |
---|
45 | 45 | | Texas Council on Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders and |

46 | 46 | | extend to their members sincere best wishes for continued success |
