5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes pleasure in |

6 | 6 | | recognizing public radio station KUT-FM on the occasion of its 50th |

7 | 7 | | anniversary; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Through the efforts of a group of students at The |
---|
9 | 9 | | University of Texas and radio-television-film Professor Robert |
---|
10 | 10 | | Schenkkan, KUT went on the air in November of 1958 as a full-power |
---|
11 | 11 | | FM radio station; it has grown from a 4,000-watt station with a |
---|
12 | 12 | | range of 15 miles to one with 100,000 watts that reaches 500,000 |
---|
13 | 13 | | people each week over the air, online, through two additional |
---|
14 | 14 | | digital channels, and through nationally syndicated original |
---|
15 | 15 | | programming; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Initially run by student volunteers, KUT-FM now |
---|
17 | 17 | | employs 65 professionals and continues its collaboration with the |
---|
18 | 18 | | university's journalism school through a competitive internship |
---|
19 | 19 | | program; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The news department, added in 2002 to expand news |
---|
21 | 21 | | coverage in the Central Texas area, has received more than 50 state, |
---|
22 | 22 | | national, and international awards, including 12 Edward R. Murrow |
---|
23 | 23 | | awards for journalistic excellence; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, From its beginning as a mostly classical station |
---|
25 | 25 | | operating three hours per night, the station has evolved over the |
---|
26 | 26 | | years with the interests of its listeners, whose donations make up |
---|
27 | 27 | | the bulk of the station's budget; it now provides news and |
---|
28 | 28 | | information, public affairs programming, and a variety of music |
---|
29 | 29 | | programming, as well as National Public Radio's popular programs |
---|
30 | 30 | | Morning Edition and All Things Considered; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Central Texas is fortunate to have such a dedicated |
---|
32 | 32 | | and talented group of broadcasting professionals and students who |
---|
33 | 33 | | supply entertainment, information, and inspiration through |
---|
34 | 34 | | programming that is now aired around the clock; now, therefore, be |
---|
35 | 35 | | it |

36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commend all those associated with KUT-FM for the |
---|
38 | 38 | | many contributions the public radio station has made to the |
---|
39 | 39 | | cultural life of Central Texas and extend to them congratulations |
---|
40 | 40 | | on KUT's 50th anniversary celebration; and, be it further |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

42 | 42 | | prepared as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
